I have purchased a new Winchester 1300. I called Winchester this am asking about Remington Hevi Shot in their shotguns. I was advised against the use of it as it would damage Winchester and Browning shotguns. I suggested this should be on the web site and it is being passed on. I thought this info would be of interest. Byron

Why? What is wrong with the Remington Hevi Shot? I'm not even sure if I've used it in my Winchester 1300.

I've used some Remington Heavy Dove load 1 1/8 and/or 1 1/4 oz 7 1/2 shot. Is that the same thing? Have I damaged my 1300?

Marco

Thy 1300 is fine. Heavy Dove loads and Hevi shot are quite different.

Hevi-Shot is a non toxic substitute for lead shot. It's used almost exclusively for waterfowl. It's an alloy of nickel, tungsten, and iron, IIRC. It;s similar to welding slag, I've been told.

Heavy Dove loads use lead, much, much softer than the Hevi stuff. A few thousand Heavy Dove loads will merely make your 1300 very slick on the pump stroke.

Byron, thanks for the headsup.....

I'm confused. (Hush, no wise remarks.)

From the FAQ at www.hevishot.com

"Only use HEVI-SHOT® in guns designed for modern steel ammunition."

So Winchester said not to shoot Hevi-Shot in modern Winchesters and Brownings?

I better tell my friends the news, although I suppose it's already too late. :)

Hevi-shot is harder than steel and a steady diet ($$!) could eventually damage or score the barrel steel. Current Hevi-shot loads include a heavy duty shot cup/wad and an extra "wrap" of plastic for barrel protection.
I've fired about 100 rounds of hevi-shot thru my SX2 at ducks and geese and some thru a browning BPS and both still have mirror-perfect barrels.

IMO, If there is somebody out there who can afford enough hevi-shot to damage a barrel, they can also afford another barrel.

Thanks. I thought maybe I'd missed something about H-S. It's not like it's going to mess up the rifling in a target rifle or something. :)

I got the following e-mail from Beretta today about Hevi Shot. Byron

We do not recommend Hevi Shot in our shotguns, Bismuth and tungsten are
acceptable.

I wonder what Remington, who is loading Hevi-Shot, says about Hevi-Shot in their shotguns. I wonder if the ammo engineers are talking with the firearms engineers.

A few posts down, you'll find a thread I started. Here it is:

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53480

The shot I was using was the very powerful 1575 fps Hevi-Shot 3" loads for duck. The other two hunters were using Benelli semi-autos. I was shooting a Stoeger semi-auto (Luger nameplate) designed for 3" high-power shells. It was that shell that stopped my semi but none of the other shotguns had any issues and they were shooting 3 1/2" shells. One particular shell was the cause of the damage since it "failed to peak" correctly. Therefore, there was an immense amount of pressure behind the load when the bolt unlocked. Why this occured is anyone's guess. The shells were brand new, bought on line from Cabela. As my posts revealed, Remington bought me a new shotgun all within ten days of the inicident. I'm pleased and Remington has a new customer for life.

My best friend shoots trap all year long (4000 shells a year) and he tells me that severe cold will definately affect the speed of a burn in some shells and you can actually hear and feel the difference. Whether or not the temperature had an affect on this shell is speculation. The bottom line, I think, is that before you shoot these extremely heavy loads in any shotgun, you really decide if it's worth it to put the shotgun through such stresses. This is the max load you're exposing it to and it's going to take a licking. The Benelli shotguns worked just fine. I guess you do get what you pay for but I'll only buy American semi-autos anymore.

My 10-y-old 870 Express/3" and my 1100 synthetic/2.75" seem to work just fine with heavy loads in freezing weather...and freezing rain and snow for that matter.

I just don't know anymore about this HeviShot stuff. Life is so confusing. :D

I got the following e-mail from Benilla. Byron

Yes sir,
You can use Remington Hevi Shot. Our guns are tested with this ammo.
