I'm just starting into reloading. After reading many many posts and websites about the topic, I've made a shopping list but have yet to place the order.
Personally, I shoot about 100 rounds per month... usually less... because walmart whitebox is about $26 per 100 now.... so each time I pull the trigger on my 1911 it's like watching 26 cents fly down range. a full magazine of 8 rounds costs me $2, and that just ain't worth it.
I, and a few friends and family, would like to shoot more but cost has become and issue especially since there's one ar-15 in the group and .223 ain't cheap either. We've been saving brass the past few months and have quite a bit together, so there's that additional savings there of making stuff from what used to be my trash. (I know, I was misguided to just put the stuff in the brass bucket and drive away, still kick myself over it)
We're going to start into reloading to save some $$$, and as a neat little hobby that as always fascinated me. We're going to start off doing just .45acp and go into other calibers, including .223, later. After much consideration, I've decided on cast lead bullets to use for all my reloads. From Midway, they're about 5.6 cents a piece... I don't think I'm ready to start casting my own bullets, and I don't have an adequate supply of lead like wheelweights to do this cheaply anyhow. Is there any place to get them cheaper?
Primers are $20 for 1000...figured can't find em any cheaper than that so I'll get them locally. Powder's about 16 per pound, so locally there too. I'm thinking w231 for now.
I'm paying about $81 for the Lee Anniversary reload kit + book. I figure getting started is going to cost about $170 bucks or so with the raw materials for the 500 or so .45acp rounds we're gonna make. plus a caliber and a gauge for the .45 acp and the dies.
Does this all sound right? are their any hidden 'gotchas' I should consider before ordering?
