CHICAGO - Mayor Richard M. Daley announced Monday he will run for a sixth term, a move that could put him office longer than his legendary father.

"I'm proud of what we've accomplished together to improve the lives of the people of Chicago," Daley, 64, said in announcing his re-election bid.

The mayor will be facing some tough questions this time around, including dealing with the fallout from federal investigations into allegations of illegal political patronage and payoffs at City Hall.
Go get him..

I thought the two people who might have faced him had already dropped out of the race?

I suspect that if anyone else stepped up, they might meet with a most unfortunate accident. Things happen, you know.
Daley makes Boss Tweed look like a shoplifter.

Chicagoans aren't going to vote him out. He's profoundly corrupt, and that's EXACTLY what they want in their politicians. Ask them and they will not just make excuses, they will express PRIDE in their system.

What a surprize, and anyone want to bet he is elected again with 80% of the vote. I think I should be able to vote in the Chicago mayoral election. It is only fair, I am only 150 miles away, but Daley seems to think he should dictate to the whole state so we should all be able to vote. Someone living downstate should be just as qualified as the dead people that vote in Chicago. Jim.

Won't happen. The only potentially real candidate (Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr D-:barf: ) dropped out a while back.

Not that he would have been any better, just a different group at the top of the corruption food chain.

Chicago ain't ready for reform. As long as the garbage gets picked-up and snow plowed off the streets and I can get you idiot brother-in-law a city job so he get his own place and move his family out of your house, the sheeple/muggles of Chicago will continue to elect Da Mayor. Even if he's in a Federal Pen.

I will take either a major event (alien invasion, zombies, mutant bears or terrorist attack) or long term one-on-one outreach to change the anti-gun mindset in Chicago.

I can attest to that. In the northwoods neighborhood where my vacation home is at, there are several families from Chicago who have nothing but pride in how their family construction businesses made fortunes many times over with 'help' from the Daleys.

Sadly having a Daley for the mayor is part of Chicagos tradition. When I saw the news and they said he had not announced he was running again I was ecstatic. But everyone knew there is no reason for him not to.

Hopefully the Chicago tradition will carry on and his son will run. His son is very conservative,by all accounts, and is serving in the US Army after college.

Either way it is best we get rid of this bum.

Daley will be indicted and convicted in his sixth term, he'll probably get 80 or so months in Club Fed, be released, and run for his 7th term...and be elected.

The only way Daley will not be mayor is when he actually in prison or dead. there are few people in the world that I feverently pray for their demise. Richard Daley is one of them. Illinois will be much better off when that man breathes his last.

Jeff

If there were only a candidate worth voting for, I'd be dancing in the streets. Last election Daley was opposed by three or four other Democrats (it's a non-partisan race) who were all basically trying to steer more city dollars to minorities, be it through contracts set aside for them or pure social welfare. That's no alternative at all.

Jesse Jackson Jr., if he would have stayed in would have been the most pro-gun candidate with only a "D" rating from the NRA (if I recall correctly.) Hopefully someone will step up in time for the election.

Opponents already bought off

His only two serious opponents were:

1. Jesse Jackson Jr. (his wife just got the nod for a seat on the Chicago city council, basically an opportunity to print money). Jesse Jr also got the OK from Daley and his designated meat puppet Governor Blago, to run the Will County Airport commission and the concession contracts, a VERY lucrative situation. Never mind that it will be out of his district and the County.

2. Rep. Luis Guiterrez, "Little Luis" got several major (as in $100's of millions) in contracts delivered to the Hispanic community on a silver platter, via the "Democrat Hispanic Allaince" in Chicago.

Both have been bought off with taxpayer money and political clout.

OTOH, when Daley finally chokes on a polish at the Taste of Chicago, or Fitzgerald indicts and convicts him, the two of them will be clawing each others eyes out to be the new lord and master of the City and State. Till then Daley continues to rule unquestioned.

"What are the real-world odds of electing a non-antigun mayor in Chicago?"

Probably about the same as winning the Illinois State Lottery, 13 million to one. They seem to grow anti-freedom politicians like dead trees grow fungus.

It's not just guns, the current mayor wants cameras on every corner of his city. Just to keep an eye on his subjects.

I don't wish to fly an American flag while I live in Illinois, it just doesn't feel like part of the United States anymore. I talk about moving and call it moving to the United States from some other place. The Statue of Liberty ought to be in Indiana.

Were stuck with him... He will win another election, even if he gets set up on charges. Just look at how he took out Migs Field. In the middle of the night.... Don't like his methods..... He controls the state and I can vote him out.... Not a Chicago resident.

My mother wanted to know if I'd move back to Apartheid Chicago if she couldn't take care of herself. I told her there was NO way that would EVER happen, but that if she wanted to move to the United States, she could live with me.

As it turns out, she's moving to Oak Forest soon. Still in Illinois, but at least it somewhat minimizes my exposure to Chicago on my infrequent visits.

Tell her to keep going South

"As it turns out, she's moving to Oak Forest soon. Still in Illinois, but at least it somewhat minimizes my exposure to Chicago on my infrequent visits."

If your Mom goes a little further South she will be in Will County. A much better situation, out of Cook County. Frankfort, Mokena and New Lenox are all nice places and absent the draconian Cook County gun laws.

In Oak Forest she will also have Bobby Rush as her Congress Critter and still be subject to the whims of the Crook County machine and tax demands.

Good luck!

Oak Forest isn't all that bad...but with that said, my friend recently moved out of OF to Indiana to get away from cook County.

I go to school in iowa City, Iowa, but I'm from the Chicago metro area, and I can say with some certainty that the Daley family is as much a part of Chicago as crime, and corruption are).

I've always assumed that the reason Daley was never voted out was that it would take years and millions of dollars to scrape his name off of EVERYTHING in the city (next time you are in Chicago...look around - it's like being in some 3rd World hellhole run by some Ray-Ban clad dictator who likes to put his name and face on everything).

DING! DING! DING!

You got it in one!

She should have moved to Indiana, but she didn't really want to move out of Chicago in the first place.

They've got just as much a right to vote as the illegals, you bigot. Just because they're no longer in the present life doesn't mean they don't have a say in what happens here.

Don't get me started on construction families, cracked butt. I knew a few of the families you talk about. Raise the fattest, laziest slobs of kids I'll ever know. Only math they ever learned was how much the bare minimum you should offer for a kickback is.

Hey CHicago

I was going to Electroics school in Chicago in the late 50's and election time came up for his dad. The landlord at the apartment house I stayed at once said about the election, the cemetaries will probably be voting again.

John Farnam on Chicago

[paraphrasing from my notes here]

If it becomes necessary to shoot - shoot like they vote in Chicago: early and often.
