My Oscar "Backlash":
"Stupid White Men" Back At #1, "Bowling" Breaks New Records
by Michael Moore

Dear friends,

It appears that the Bush administration will have succeeded in colonizing Iraq sometime in the next few days. This is a blunder of such magnitude -- and we will pay for it for years to come. It was not worth the life of one single American kid in uniform, let alone the thousands of Iraqis who have died, and my condolences and prayers go out to all of them.

So, where are all those weapons of mass destruction that were the pretense for this war? Ha! There is so much to say about all this, but I will save it for later.

What I am most concerned about right now is that all of you -- the majority of Americans who did not support this war in the first place -- not go silent or be intimidated by what will be touted as some great military victory. Now, more than ever, the voices of peace and truth must be heard. I have received a lot of mail from people who are feeling a profound sense of despair and believe that their voices have been drowned out by the drums and bombs of false patriotism. Some are afraid of retaliation at work or at school or in their neighborhoods because they have been vocal proponents of peace. They have been told over and over that it is not "appropriate" to protest once the country is at war, and that your only duty now is to "support the troops."

Can I share with you what it's been like for me since I used my time on the Oscar stage two weeks ago to speak out against Bush and this war? I hope that, in reading what I'm about to tell you, you'll feel a bit more emboldened to make your voice heard in whatever way or forum that is open to you.

When "Bowling for Columbine" was announced as the Oscar winner for Best Documentary at the Academy Awards, the audience rose to its feet. It was a great moment, one that I will always cherish. They were standing and cheering for a film that says we Americans are a uniquely violent people, using our massive stash of guns to kill each other and to use them against many countries around the world. They were applauding a film that shows George W. Bush using fictitious fears to frighten the public into giving him whatever he wants. And they were honoring a film that states the following: The first Gulf War was an attempt to reinstall the dictator of Kuwait; Saddam Hussein was armed with weapons from the United States; and the American government is responsible for the deaths of a half-million children in Iraq over the past decade through its sanctions and bombing. That was the movie they were cheering, that was the movie they voted for, and so I decided that is what I should acknowledge in my speech.

And, thus, I said the following from the Oscar stage:

"On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glynn and Michael Donovan (from Canada), I would like to thank the Academy for this award. I have invited the other Documentary nominees on stage with me. They are here in solidarity because we like non-fiction. We like non-fiction because we live in fictitious times. We live in a time where fictitious election results give us a fictitious president. We are now fighting a war for fictitious reasons. Whether it's the fiction of duct tape or the fictitious 'Orange Alerts,' we are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you. And, whenever you've got the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up."

Halfway through my remarks, some in the audience started to cheer. That immediately set off a group of people in the balcony who started to boo. Then those supporting my remarks started to shout down the booers. The L. A. Times reported that the director of the show started screaming at the orchestra "Music! Music!" in order to cut me off, so the band dutifully struck up a tune and my time was up. (For more on why I said what I said, you can read the op-ed I wrote for the L.A. Times, plus other reaction from around the country at my website)

The next day -- and in the two weeks since -- the right-wing pundits and radio shock jocks have been calling for my head. So, has all this ruckus hurt me? Have they succeeded in "silencing" me?

Well, take a look at my Oscar "backlash":

-- On the day after I criticized Bush and the war at the Academy Awards, attendance at "Bowling for Columbine" in theaters around the country went up 110% (source: Daily Variety/BoxOfficeMojo.com). The following weekend, the box office gross was up a whopping 73% (Variety). It is now the longest-running consecutive commercial release in America, 26 weeks in a row and still thriving. The number of theaters showing the film since the Oscars has INCREASED, and it has now bested the previous box office record for a documentary by nearly 300%.

-- Yesterday (April 6), "Stupid White Men" shot back to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. This is my book's 50th week on the list, 8 of them at number one, and this marks its fourth return to the top position, something that virtually never happens.

-- In the week after the Oscars, my website was getting 10-20 million hits A DAY (one day we even got more hits than the White House!). The mail has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive (and the hate mail has been hilarious!).

-- In the two days following the Oscars, more people pre-ordered the video for "Bowling for Columbine" on Amazon.com than the video for the Oscar winner for Best Picture, "Chicago."

-- In the past week, I have obtained funding for my next documentary, and I have been offered a slot back on television to do an updated version of "TV Nation"/ "The Awful Truth."

I tell you all of this because I want to counteract a message that is told to us all the time -- that, if you take a chance to speak out politically, you will live to regret it. It will hurt you in some way, usually financially. You could lose your job. Others may not hire you. You will lose friends. And on and on and on.

Take the Dixie Chicks. I'm sure you've all heard by now that, because their lead singer mentioned how she was ashamed that Bush was from her home state of Texas, their record sales have "plummeted" and country stations are boycotting their music. The truth is that their sales are NOT down. This week, after all the attacks, their album is still at #1 on the Billboard country charts and, according to Entertainment Weekly, on the pop charts during all the brouhaha, they ROSE from #6 to #4. In the New York Times, Frank Rich reports that he tried to find a ticket to ANY of the Dixie Chicks' upcoming concerts but he couldn't because they were all sold out. (To read Rich's column from yesterday's Times, "Bowling for Kennebunkport," go here. He does a pretty good job of laying it all out and talks about my next film and the impact it could potentially have.) Their song, "Travelin' Soldier" (a beautiful anti-war ballad) was the most requested song on the internet last week. They have not been hurt at all -- but that is not what the media would have you believe. Why is that? Because there is nothing more important now than to keep the voices of dissent -- and those who would dare to ask a question -- SILENT. And what better way than to try and take a few well-known entertainers down with a pack of lies so that the average Joe or Jane gets the message loud and clear: "Wow, if they would do that to the Dixie Chicks or Michael Moore, what would they do to little ol' me?" In other words, shut the f--- up.

And that, my friends, is the real point of this film that I just got an Oscar for -- how those in charge use FEAR to manipulate the public into doing whatever they are told.

Well, the good news -- if there can be any good news this week -- is that not only have neither I nor others been silenced, we have been joined by millions of Americans who think the same way we do. Don't let the false patriots intimidate you by setting the agenda or the terms of the debate. Don't be defeated by polls that show 70% of the public in favor of the war. Remember that these Americans being polled are the same Americans whose kids (or neighbor's kids) have been sent over to Iraq. They are scared for the troops and they are being cowed into supporting a war they did not want -- and they want even less to see their friends, family, and neighbors come home dead. Everyone supports the troops returning home alive and all of us need to reach out and let their families know that.

Unfortunately, Bush and Co. are not through yet. This invasion and conquest will encourage them to do it again elsewhere. The real purpose of this war was to say to the rest of the world, "Don't Mess with Texas - If You Got What We Want, We're Coming to Get It!" This is not the time for the majority of us who believe in a peaceful America to be quiet. Make your voices heard. Despite what they have pulled off, it is still our country.

Yours,

Michael Moore

[Standing back to watch the fireworks...]

So, what exactly does he think about the Iraqis in the streets of baghdad cheering and beating up pictures and statutes of Saddam?

I read that Iraq's dis-information minister used to be an english professor.
It appears that Mr. Moore must have studied under him. :uhoh:

Lies!
This is a flat out lie!
I was watching this story.... the precipitous fall of the twits on the Billboard music charts...
The started out as #1 Then they spoke their mind and went to #3, #4 then # 6. # 7 and right now # 16 on the Billboard 200.

http://www.billboard.com/bb/charts/bb200.jsp

And on the Billboard Hot Country Singles the fell completetly off the top 20 (costs to access the full list)

Yeah, they still are #1 on the Top Country Albums - give it time.
http://www.billboard.com/bb/charts/country.jsp

But I went to the CMT web site just to check sentiment, and the posts there are highly critical of the statement and the explanation/retraction?
I regard their right to say what they want as gospel. After all it WAS purchased with the lives of soldiers who gave all for it. I also greaty believe in their fan bases' right to make a statement by not purchasing their product.

On the day after I criticized Bush and the war at the Academy Awards, attendance at "Bowling for Columbine" in theaters around the country went up 110% (source: Daily Variety/BoxOfficeMojo.com).

Guess this means 11 more people went to see that tripe?...

In the week after the Oscars, my website was getting 10-20 million hits A DAY (one day we even got more hits than the White House!). The mail has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive (and the hate mail has been hilarious!).

Is that WhiteHouse.com? :what: I imagine people who checked out this website are also the type who stare at villiage idiots, too...:scrutiny:

In the two days following the Oscars, more people pre-ordered the video for "Bowling for Columbine" on Amazon.com than the video for the Oscar winner for Best Picture, "Chicago."

That was nice of your mom...

Take the Dixie Chicks. I'm sure you've all heard by now that, because their lead singer mentioned how she was ashamed that Bush was from her home state of Texas, their record sales have "plummeted" and country stations are boycotting their music.

My God! He finally spoke the truth...:what:

In the New York Times, Frank Rich reports that he tried to find a ticket to ANY of the Dixie Chicks' upcoming concerts but he couldn't because they were all sold out.

Most were sold before Natalie's "diareaha of the mouth". Most ticket agencies don't give refunds...

"Wow, if they would do that to the Dixie Chicks or Michael Moore, what would they do to little ol' me?" In other words, shut the f--- up.

No. But, if you do express an opinion counter to the majority of Americans, be prepared to take a hit financially & politically...

And that, my friends, is the real point of this film that I just got an Oscar for -- how those in charge use FEAR to manipulate the public into doing whatever they are told.

That about sums up his movie career...

Unfortunately, Bush and Co. are not through yet. This invasion and conquest will encourage them to do it again elsewhere.

I HOPE SO! And I hope it "encorages" other nations threatening our national security (hey, has anyone heard from N. Korea lately? ) of what to expect...

May Michael Moore's career be as distinguished as that of his namesake's...Michael Bellisies. :barf:

"Stupid White Men"

that would be Mikey Moore's & Prof. Mikey Belles-Lies co-authored autobiography, right ? ? ?

////smarmy smart-*** mode off

I've always been amazed and amused about how these strange creatures are so eager to run their mouths in advance of any knowledge of fact.

They've nattered away about "no WMD" and "the Iraqi people will kill our soldiers" and "Saddam's elite forces" and on and on...

Wrong.

"He who laughs last, laughs best."

:D, Art

I couldn't even finish reading this non-sense :banghead:

PS. maybe one of these days Michael Moore will be held up at knife point and saved by a CCW holder. "No thanks necessary Moore, just shut up."

Sounds like "Baghdad Bob" just found a new job with MM as his ghostwriter.

Academy Awards...

Brought to you by the mindless, for the mindless, in recognition of mindlessness and for the perputation of mindlessness.

Numbers don`t lie, but liars use numbers all the time. Moore`s "facts" generally don`t hold a lot of water. He has very little credibilty. Forget him...

Hey, I bought "Stupid White Men"; imagine my chagrin when I discovered it wasn`t his autobiography...

Micheal Moore has such audacity, I wish someone of my limited intelligence could resist his superior mental cohesion. Please Mr. Moore, Oh great insipid one, spare me the agony of such incredulous rationale. Forgive the pustulant mire I have been infecting in our children. MM you are not worth it............;)

he seems to have conufused correlation with cause and effect. you see, he won an oscar, and said some stupid stuff. then more people saw his movie and paid for the video online. he also mentioned that these people also paid for 'chigaco' at the same time.

so, which is the more likely scenario? they did this because they supported his view, or because he got a whole lot of advertisement as an oscar winner, along with 'chicago'?

along those lines ... we captured bagdad, and I bought more cheese. does that mean that I bought more cheese because we captured bagdad, or because I was running out of cheese in the refrigerator?

It will never cease to amaze me how many stupid people there are in this country. Just because a movie wins lots of awards does NOT mean it is worth seeing, just as a movie that wins NO awards might BE worth seeing. Unfortunately there are a lot of people that have to take someone else's word for it instead of developing their own opinion.

I read as much of Mr Moore's Trash as I could stand...

But couldn't get past the part when he claims to have been praying:uhoh: Had to quit at that point and take an anti-emetic
:barf: :barf: :barf:
The guy is simply astounding in his arrogant ravings. :banghead:

I checked Stupid White Men out at the public library. That was a mistake. At the time, I wanted to read it to clear up some things I'd been told on his website (that was before he shut down the forums and blamed it on "technical problems" for several months.) If I'd known he was going to take his ball and go home, I could have saved myself the nausea.

I don't go in much for all the exaggeration we sometimes get carried away with--"Susan Sarandon was on my TV last night, and it took me an hour to clean up the puke, ha ha!"--but this book really was enough to make one feel physically ill. The lies were insultingly brazen, as if he just didn't care if anyone believed him or not. It was wild stuff.

A lot of copies of The Protocols of Zion can be found in Jewish homes, too. That doesn't mean there are a lot of Jews out there who think fondly of the twits who wrote it, only that a lot of Jews choose to read it so they know what's out there.

The guy's a puke, slimeball, stab-you-in-the back type.

The only time I ever enjoyed the dude was Roger and Me. At that time, I felt he was just a little guy, representing the little guy, and simply making a statement againt the Evil Corporate World and how his town was affected by a huge plant closure. He had a lot of valid points we should all think about, even today. But, ...

Now,

Never thought he would go this far.

The Dude should just move to France now.

Yo! Malone!

I still fail to understand why you felt it neccessary to bring up Michael (make it up as you go along) Moore?

wasn't that the whole point of his thread?

I already know Malone is an anti-war type. I can live with that, but

I'm sure even Mr. Malone will agree that our actions have liberated a people???

I refuse to read anything that Michael Moore has said or written.

I'm just chimin' in to say that I didn't read the article. I don't know what he said. Neither do I care, not one iota.. I just don't give a flamin' rats turd ! :banghead:

(Don't mind me, I'm just passin' through.) :uhoh:

Hey, somebody's gotta bring THIS up...

The Shock of Truth Is Blowing Minds

Exclusive commentary by Patrick Rooney

Apr 7, 2003

George Bush has done something remarkable—his relentless prosecution of the war on terrorism has had the effect of a hand grenade, tossed into the collective minds of the world’s doubters.

Some conservatives like myself have had our assumptions challenged. I once looked at the world as kind of a losing proposition. I saw the corruption and billowing federalism in America. Though I could see improvements on a small scale around me, our Founding Fathers’ vision of a shining beacon on a hill was slipping away: government and internationalists’ power constantly growing; social problems continuing to worsen. In short, victory on a worldwide scale for the forces of good seemed impossible.

I no longer believe that.

For the greatest force for good in the world is embodied in the United States of America. We have the wisest leader; and the strongest, best equipped military in the world. Most important of all, we have the American people, much more resilient and powerful than their enemies—or even they themselves—may have previously realized.

A spiritual equation has been proven—good is stronger than evil, and will always win when it is fully employed.

The forces of evil in this world have likewise been hit by the same concussive blast. They are disoriented and shocked. Saddam Hussein and his wicked cohorts are receiving their just desserts.

Enemies like North Korea, Iran, Syria, China, and others have now straightened up and taken notice—Bush don’t play.

Our most dangerous foe, the morally inferior enemy within, is in shock too—the rules of the game have changed and no one’s told them! The Hollywood left, for instance, used to routinely viciously attack conservatives or the president without penalty. That was then.

Now ask the Dixie Chicks what’s happened to their careers when they downgraded our president on foreign soil. Ask Susan Sarandon, whose kooky activism lost her a United Way gig.

Ask Peter Arnett, the Goebbels of Baghdad. After his recent traitorous comments which aided and abetted the enemy, NBC, facing viewer heat, fired him as quick as the networks used to dump politically incorrect folks like Jimmy the Greek.

Fox News Channel has been responsible for a lot of this—God Bless ‘em! The truth is finally being broadcast. Bill O’Reilly—a real journalist—is number one now, not “Mr. Softball†Larry King. There is a God!

Some of these media people still don’t get it. The anti-Bush Katie Couric still thinks we’re buying her phony “sweet as pie†persona. She’s going to be in for a rude awakening. Even the idiotic Michael Moore, he of Oscar’s speech infamy, will see his comeuppance. So will Madonna, who recently had to pull back her video showing the aging entertainer tossing a grenade into the lap of a President Bush look-alike. The negative blowback from this outrageous and desperate act will likely catch her unawares and unprepared.

The wholly unprincipled Democratic contenders have had their minds blown as well. First there was Tom Daschle’s ill-timed and partisan remarks against the president; now John Kerry has felt the wrath of the American people. What kind of man, himself in government, would make a statement in the whitest heat of wartime saying that we need a “regime change†in America, thereby likening our president to Saddam Hussein?!

Once upon a time, competing politicians at least had the decency and humanity to close ranks once we were engaged in foreign warfare. No longer. We are now in the age of classless ex-presidents like Carter and Clinton. The American people, and history, will not be kind to these fools.

The college knee-jerk anti-war crowd is shocked too. They had the Vietnam playbook, and merely plugged it in thinking it was a cookbook which would produce predictable results. Knock, knock, guys: Iraq ain’t Vietnam, pass it on!

The black community too is undergoing an upheaval of interesting proportions. The daily images of Secretary of State Colin Powell and Brigadier General Vincent Brooks, both handling their jobs with class, has had a positive effect on blacks viewers. I’ve even seen (gasp!) black preachers like Eddie Long voice support for the war effort.

There is truly a war within a war playing out now. A war in the homes…schools… media…Hollywood…music business…churches…in black and Hispanic America too. It’s a war for our hearts and minds, and it’s on!

An era is ending—the era of dominant evil. It has held power for so long. Too long. But alas, the light of day is coming. The old order and the emperor’s new clothes have been exposed. Yes, he is naked, and is he ugly!

This is why we see so much desperation worldwide. It is actually a good thing to witness because it has brought all of our enemies out into the cold light.

Everything the president has said about the Iraqi regime is showing itself to be true. These are brutal, wicked beings. There is no difference between Adolph Hitler and Saddam Hussein. Hitler just built himself more military means and public relations power and succeeded in murdering more human beings than Hussein. The only difference of note here is that George Bush is not Neville Chamberlain.

The minds of our one-time allies France and Germany, and even neighbors Canada and Mexico, have blown too. Where can they credibly position themselves after their public betrayal and our subsequent victory?

And what of the United Nations? The collective mind of the U.N. is in shock. The president has shown the world we don’t need them, that they are dead weight—or worse. I pray their days are numbered.

The shock of truth is blowing minds and changing the face of the world. It is bringing our friends closer, and scaring the hell out of our enemies. Here’s to it, and to a president who understands its necessity.

EDIT: PLEASE, DO NOT FORGET what REAL Americans did to the Dick Chicks and that *&$&^% Columbia U "professor."

The Ditsy Chickens' record sales have PLUMMETED, and they have recieved tons of feedback from enraged fans.

That worthless waste of skin Columbia U prof went into hiding because he "feared for his life."

WE sent him packing with his stupid, skinny tail between his stupid, skinny legs. :D

The left is losing, and is going to lose.

They just can't accept that fact just yet.

Oh well...

P.S.:

Did you know BFC isn't even a real "documentary" by definition?

The guy (moore) is such a low-life, lying oxygen thief, I cannot express it in words.

http://www.hardylaw.net/Truth_About_Bowling.html

PPS: Moore: Check out what happened to that Columbia U "prof." courtesy of REAL Americans. Stay tuned for similar developments.

Guys, honestly; as I said above; the left is losing.

Did you know Michael Savages' book is/was a best seller for almost 15 weeks?

We are called the "right" side for a reason.
