whats the current situation on hi-cap 22lr plinkers?

ive been outta the market for a while and thinking about something new and fun...

so far...

a number of 22 kits for the ar15
gsg-5
ruger 10/22 hicap mags

anything else? i want the most reliable out of the bunch... perhaps suppressed... ;)

rem 597 has some also

Ruger 10/22 is the the way to go IMHO, I bought 50rd Ramline mags for $22 last month at a gun show (new) and $10.95 30rd mags online last month also... so they are still available cheap. The 50rd ramlines are nice because they are side by side stack so its only slightly longer than a 30rd, but it takes more effort to load (firmer spring?). Its a great rifle with a very low cost, everyone should own one. You will need to file down the hammer or buy the $30 Vq hammer b/c the factory trigger is 7-8 pounds. Mine is maybe 2.5 lbs with a filed hammer. I had thought about trying some other 22s but really not sure how the triggers are, if they can be modified at home simiply like the ruger, or if aftermarket parts are even available. The other thing I like about the ruger is how common aftermarket or takeoff stocks are, I can cut into a factory stock if I want my kids to start shooting it.

I love my Ruger 10/22, I'd recommend one to anybody. Highly accurate, very reliable, TONS of aftermarket parts.

On the subject of mags, are there any drum mags still available? MWG used to make them, but all the websites say they're no longer available, and only the fugly tear drop shaped ones are.

kel tec plr 22, sig 522, the gsg right now looks to be the best; the 10.22 has higher cap mags of course, but is not as reliable, unless you go with tactical innovations mags. you can get the mag coupler for the gsg mags, that are 22 rounders, so you've got 44 rounds at your disposal.

Get the krinker plinker kit for the 10/22!!

www.krinkerplinker.com

Uses real ak-74 parts, takes hi-cap mags.. and looks cool as hell too!

I think there's also an mg-42 kit floating around as well.

Ramline, Eagle, Butler Creek, Tactical Innovations, Shooters Ridge, MWG, a few others.

The best HIGH CAP mag is the Tactical Innovations. Not even a question on that one. The absolute worst is the Jamlines, ERRRR, Ramlines, the new models, post ban, are CRAP. They don't load, they don't feed, but they do have lifetime warranties. Butler Creek are the easiest to find, with the BC steel lips being far better. Everything else you take your chances.

I do happen to have a pre ban Ramline 50 rounder that feeds and loads perfectly. I bought two new Ramlines and they would not even load, total garbage, took them back and got a tact inn and never looked back.

If you get 10/22 and large capacity magazines, look for the Shooter's Ridge loader. The Butler Creek loader is also good, but only works with the Butler Creek mags, the Shooter's Ridge works with all mine -- Ramline, Butler Creek (steel and hot lips), Eagle, and of course Shooter's Ridge.

The Ramline loader is total crap and a waste of your time and money.

Putting in a Volquartson "Exact Edge" extractor made all my cheap 10/22 mags work.

I believe you use a stone, because a file will remove too much metal

I picked up a metal file from the garage and took the angle off by hand with just the file (I looked at picture of the VQ hammer beside the stock hammer), I figured if I messed it up I would drop the $30 to buy a VQ. I took a little more off to make it even lighter.

Wally: I couldn't disagree more. The Shooter's Ridge loader came apart in my hand after loading about three mags. I've easily loaded ten bricks through my Butler Creek loader into Butler Creek, Ramline, and Eagle mags.

I put the Exact Edge extractor in too and it makes a world of difference. The Ramline mag is a piece of junk but it went from 10% success to about 80%. Eagle mag isn't too bad. I've had great luck with the Steel Lips BC mags and Federal bulk ammo.

When I used to have a 10/22, I tried Ramlines and Mitchell drums. The drums worked somewhat better, but honestly, they both sucked and I went back to the factory 10 rounders. They weren't high cap mags, but at least they were reliable.

Folks, can we please give the "hi-cap" term a rest?

The AWB lapsed 4 years ago.

You have "designed capacity" magazines, which should be simply referred to as "magazines".

You have "legislated capacity" magazines, which if you live in CA or NY or other repressed area, should be called "ban mags" or similar.

When you use the term 'hi-cap', you just reinforce the anti gun message.

I like my GSG-5 alot. I prefer it to either of the 10/22s that I own. I would really like a .22 AR upper however. The new sig looks pretty cool. We will see what the quality of it ends up being but if it is reliable and well made it looks fun.

Also if the GSG AK endsup being decent I will want one of those as a trainer for my AKs.

If you own an AR already the upper makes a lot of sense to me

Nordic Components is also now making their AR-22 conversion kit for the 10/22. I had the chance to run a lot of ammo through one at Rocky Mountain 3 Gun last year, and have no problem recommending them. I had no problems hitting small steel plates at distances out to (iirc) 80 yards with the Nordic guns, even with the factory trigger.

Reliability with the Tactical Innovations magazine and Federal Bulk Pack .22 was acceptable- only a couple of failures that were directly attributable to the ammunition.

While at the match, Matt Burkett recommended the AR22 as a fantastic way to practice practical rifle shooting on a limited budget, and was kind enough to give me a couple of extremely helpful pointers that were easy to duplicate and practice with the AR22.

For more info, Zak Smith has an article where he talks about the AR22 here.

My shooting buddy and I have 3 GSG-5's between the two of us and about 20 mags. It is a blast to go to the range and just cut loose with one. Certainly not the real thing, but a lot of fun none the less.

now im not one to help out antigunners but a remington 597 was designed to hold 5 rnds. i want 25. hence "hi-cap" ;)

so where do i get these elusive 597 "extended capacity magazines" (that work for ya?) >:)

I think remmy themselves make them. I see them all the time at Gander Mountain, Academy.
yes an exact edge extractor will make your 10.22 run right, just make sure you do the procedure, inside a large, seethrough plastic bag, big enough to do the work with both hands inside the bag. Why? because you will SPROING!!!! the ejector spring at least once, send the parts flying. this way , they stay in the bag, and are easy to find.
