Greetings!
I live in the People's Republic of California where fun gun ownership is a felony and mags with capacities over 10 are banned. (as is a simple transfer of magazines between shooting buddies!!) :cuss:

I use my old pre-ban AR15 20 & 30 round mags with my KelTec SU16 rifle. Two of the magazines are now defective due to being worn out- including one with the tabs holding the floorplate in place has fatigue cracked /broken off and won't hold the floor in place rendering it worthless. I'm running out!

Can anyone tell me if I can purchase just the outer shell of 20 round mags legally? What constitutes a "hi cap magazine"? Is it the magazine's "guts" or the outer shell?? Seems to me like it has to be the whole assembly otherwise they are just inert metallic junk / stampings!!

I simply want to exchange my preban defective magazine tube for a replacement tube.... Can /will the original manufacturer (Colt) do that? I know I can't buy the whole assembly but I CAN buy replacement springs and followers but I haven't seen the outer shell....

Anyone have any insight??

Rebuilding your old hicap mags is perfectly legal in california. Building new mags isn't. You can buy mag bodies from several places or you can even buy disassembled mags to rebuild your old ones. If yours are pretty worn you could use your old floor plate and use the new body, spring and follower for your rebuild. you can get them here:http://www.44mag.com/products.asp?dept=1326. They will disassemble the mags for $1.50 each then ship them to you. Mark

Yup - rebuild em. Buy complete rebuild kits, mix and match and keep your receipts "just in case"...parts is parts...
