Hello, I'm new to this forum. I have a few pistols and rifles, enjoy shooting, live in Wyoming, have a wife, and a bunch of pets, a couple horses, and I drive a Prius.:D Not really, I have a truck. I look forward to browsing the board and seeing what there is to learn.

I recently had an opportunity to shoot a gun I've always wanted to shoot. A vintage WWII M1A1 Thompson, full auto. It was sweet. I've been considering picking one up. I don't have any sort of Class III qualifications, so am looking at semi-auto.

I'm doing my homework, and trying to find opinions and recommendations about makers, and sources for a quality Semi-Auto Thompson, or more importantly what to stay away from. I like the military version, but I quickly got overwhelmed with all the different types available. I'll try to attach a pic of the one I shot. I'd like something similar. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to THR!

I don't know much about semi-auto Thompsons, but if you want the real thing, the only qualifications you need to get into NFA weapons are that you can pass a standard background check (like you'd have for a pistol) and that you pay a $200 tax. Its really not that difficult. Assuming that is, that you can afford the machine gun in the first place... They're expensive to buy and even more expensive to feed :D

There's a good bit about NFA weapons on here, so if you're interested, stick around and I'm sure you'll pick up a lot of it.

Thanks for the info. I have more to learn than to contribute at this point, when it comes to firearms. I've done a fair amount of shooting with a variety of guns, but I"m no expert on the subject.

Auto Ordance currently makes semi-auto SBR Thompsons. You can also have to work done on a 16" barrelled Thompson after you pay the $200 tax and the ATF approves the paperwork.

This assumes though that your state allows SBR possession. Not all states do.
