I'm wondering about all the different Hi powers out there. There is the belgian/browning hi power, the bulgarian arcus, the argentina fm, and the hungarian feg. Is there any more?

I want to get a real hi power but I want it to be my carry gun so I also want something cheaper just like it so that I can abuse and practice with. What one of the high power clones is best? How much better is the original hi power and why/how is it even better?

here you go. Isreali hi-power. if you dont mind something that has seen use and you can abuse with plenty of practice then here you go. Its better then buying a FM imho. At this price you can have it refinished later without putting to much money into it. new production MkIIIs run $699 and up, and most of the belgian/browning made hi powers you find on GB are going to run about the same.

So $375 is a very good price.

Finish is shot, but that is a good price for A MK III FN HP. Note dovetail front sight and large rear sights.

Shoot this one a couple of thousand rounds. If the FN HP is meant for you, have it refinished. If not, you can get your money back out of it at this pricepoint. FEGS and FMs command a comparable or higher price these days and this one is the real deal.

Buy some mec gar mags from CDNN investments and you are good to go.

first visit www.hipowersandhandguns.com
then decide not to get the cheapest beater gun you can find.
the current MK IIIs are the best way to start.
my luck has been poor at best with clones so as for my self I won't be buying anymore.

Ok, just wanted to steer a guy away from potential issues. That looks like an early MKIII with a forged frame, it'd be ok to start with.

I just bought one of those Israeli's from Robertson Trading Post on GunsAmerica. It should arrive in the next few days. I bought an FM Hi Power a few weeks ago.

It's pretty hard to go wrong with a Hi Power. I don't know about the Arcus, but the FM and Feg parts are interchangeable with the FN/Browning guns. You can swap out springs, barrels, sights, grips, etc, between any of them. It's a lot like a 1911 in that you can buy a base gun and customize it to whatever level you want. There are lots of aftermarket parts and upgrades available. And any of them are fine pistols without doing a thing to them.

Look around, there are deals to be had. I picked up a nice Belgian MKIII in great shape for $400 thru PAFOA (private seller). Keep an eye out on the different forums that are out here or put up an add that your looking for one, you might get lucky.

Mauser's SA-80 was also made by FEG but has a higher quality finish. Have'nt come across one for sale in a long time but they are nice old pistols.

I've tried Argentine FM's and FEG P9R's; both are decent enough guns but could use some further refinement, especially with their triggers. They also usually come with the same tiny sights and hard to activate thumb safety as per the original Hi-Power design.

My Mk.III came from the factory with the best trigger I've ever encountered on a Hi-Power. The high-visibilty sights and extended ambi safety were also welcome improvements over previous versions. The only modification I've done on the gun was the addition of Pachmayr grips as I didn't care for the feel of the original plastic grips. All in all, one very capable and accurate Hi-Power.

I picked up a Charles Daly and really like it. They were made with FEG parts and put together very well. The slide is cut for Novak 1911 style sights and came with Xpress sights. The safety has a more positive feet than the Browning/FN models I've handled. I paid $310 for it used in great shape. Unfortunately, they don't make them anymore.

This gun has handled any FMJ and JHP ammo I've fed it, even with the old style humped feed ramp. Others may not be as reliable with JHP.
