Just joined the site. First time posting; I've been a member of sites which cover different topics under the same format as this one and I know that some of the members (at least on the other sites) are a little touchy about posting in the wrong place, so if I am, please forgive and indulge me for now.
I have just came into position of an old black powder gun which has been in storage in my Grandfathers basement for at least 80 years. I have been searching for a couple of days now trying to identify it with no sucess. I have very little knowledge on these types of rifles so other than describing it and attaching these following pictures. All the brass fittings are stamped with these symbols.. In case they are not clear , from what I can see, it looks like a crown with a S underneath the crown, the lower swirl of the S ends with a fork. ( something like a fish tail) theres also the number 40 stamped on every brass piece, and on the butt plate, there is a 30 followed by what appears to be a 4 or a 1, and underneath that is another 0. What I'm looking for is a possible, maker, date and if theres any value in the rifle. Thank you to whomever may reply, I appreciate your time

I dont have a clue, BUT, I assure you it will be most helpful to have a full size picture of the whole gun so somebody can figure this out.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!

First let me say, welcome to the forum sir. Now there maybe answer to your questions but it will take someone who is very familar with those markings as being peculiar to a specific maker / model. May I suggest that you take another picture or two of the entire gun so as to give a time frame that the gun may have been made. P.T.

Well looks like somebody else had the same idea at the same time.

Thats a neat story and I imagine a neat gun. (Bigger pics would be good) Thats an important piece of family history, so I hope you have no intentions of selling this rifle. I think it deserves to be passed down to your grandkids and to theirs. I'm not sure if you have any interest in guns, but please take it from someone who's dad squandered his great grandfather's gun collection; your kids or grand kids might want that rifle.

Thanks all and thanks for the link. No I do not have any intention of selling the rifle and I will post a larger pic of the complete rifle when I can. Have to wait for a better camera, those were from a web cam. Should I post in this thread or start another when I get a good pic.
