I have good supply of ammo that has been in storage for around 15 years.(in ammo cans) It is in individual packages of 30 rounds each and those packages are in plastic 300 round battle packs.

The ammo was made by IMI company which I believe is in Israel.

I just want to determine if this is 55 grain ammo or something else ---and I can't find my damn bullet puller. On a couple www sites I have found references to the IMI 77 grain bullets so I'm a little leery of it.

The box markings are

30 Rd 5.56 X 45mm BALL M1A2... and a series of numbers stamped on the label which I think is a lot number 614 A 83.

The cases are brass and the head stamp is an 83 with a 12 under it.

Any opinions on the quality of this ammo would also be appreciated.

I believe that's South African 55gr ammo: the equivilent of US M193 ball.

Supposed to be good-shooting ammo.

You are correct that IMI is Israeli, but the ammo you describe does fit the identification of South African.

Brown paper boxes, headstamped with "83" at 12 o'clock and "12" at 6 o'clock.

Mine says : 30 RD 5,56 x 45mm BALL M1A2 672 A 83
on the brown paper box.

I don't have the battlepacks so I don't know what was printed on them.

The South Africans sourced stuff from Israel so I would not be surprised at Israeli manufacture.
The South African R4 rifle for example is a licensed Galil.

It is 55gr ball similar to US M193.

It sure sounds like we have the same stuff.

It it 55 grain then???? How does it shoot???

I notice that the brass on mine has some very fine pitting.... Would you guys consider this to be "okay" blasting ammo??

I have a brand new DPMS that would be the platform.
