I have one and it's identical to a Rock Island, same quality, etc...

I've got one too.
No problems (well, to be honest there were a few that were mag related... nothing wrong with the gun, or even the mag that came with it... I had a few cheapies that caused issues )
has the features of guns costing twice as much and shoots just as well.
I got a 1911 for the price of a glock. - Can't beat that...
And before I bought it, I looked around here and other sites. - I've never even heard of any systemic problems with the guns. (customer support has been criticized, but even that appears to have been fixed, and for that price, you can send it off to a high-end smith to be tuned and still not have as much invested as an out-of-the-box Kimber.)

The High Standard GI 1911 is made side-by-side with the RIA guns in the Philippines. They're both imported by Armscor. I think the High Standard has nicer checkered grips.
The High Standard target grade guns, the more expensive ones, are "made in Texas" according to an e-mail I got from their customer service people. However the hardball gun I looked at had the same mediocre finish of the RIAs, but the trigger and slide-frame-barrel fit were better. I suspect the higher end guns are made from asian parts and fitted in Texas, but I don't know that for sure.
I want a GI 1911 too, and I'm thinking either I'd save $50 and get a RIA GI, or spend another $100 and get a Sprinfield Armory (my gunsmith likes the SA barrels and doesn't repace them when he accurizes a gun). I like High Standards-the old ones-but it's not worth the $50 to me over the RIA.

Oh, you're in Phoenix too...was it the one they had at Cabelas? I was very tempted by that one, but they have a slightly used GI Springfield in the "gun library" for the same price that I thought might be a better deal.
With the GI guns I don't think you can go too far wrong with RIA, HS, or SA. They're all loose, reliable, durable, and a good platform for building up. Only way you could go wrong is maybe paying too much.

I get the sense that this is a Glock town. I've found that the 1911 selection in town is a bit light, and most are the bells-and-whistles 1911s. GI-type 1911s are pretty hard to find and they go fast, except for that one at Cabelas, apparently.
Scottsdale Gun Club gets SA 1911s in pretty regularly, but they go right back out the door. They have a stainless GI right now for $550, and nothing else without a beavertail. I'm surprised that such a posh place has such good prices, but they seem to sell huge volumes.
Cabelas has had that HS 1911 for about 2 months, and they say they get SA shipments unpredictably.
Sportsmans selection, both here and back in Denver was pretty light on 1911s. Too bad since they have great prices on everything else under the sun.
I haven't found any RIAs for sale around here yet, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled.
Back in Denver (I just moved) the gun show had High Standards and RIAs, and the only place I found RIAs other than that was at a Tractor Supply type place in the sporting goods section.

1 of the 6 handguns I own was bought in a store, the rest were online. Most stores just can't or won't compete with online prices (and that includes shipping/transfer fee).
...that and they never have exactly what I want, but they are more than willing to try to talk me into something "good enough".
