I have a Swedish M1896 but I need a taller front sight. Does anyone know where I can reliably pick up one?

I have used front sight blanks that were intentionally too tall, you simply shoot and file down until it's right. They would have come from Midway or Brownell's.

Either Samco or Sarco carries them. I always get those companies confused. It's the company who imported most the of swedes, if that helps. Do a web search for "Sarco" or "Samco" and you should find it with no problem.

Samco has several listed, but I don't know about the sizing. They're +1.5, +2, etc. but I don't know how to translate that. When I find out I'll order one from them as they have some other Swede accessories I 'need'. Really I need them. ;)

As an aside, I've never changed a front sight. Can I do this at home with a punch, or do I need a front sight tool?
Thanks,
RT

I replaced mine with a punch. You need to either have someone else hold the rifle, which is what I did, or put it in a padded vice.

I used a +1.5 replacement. My full-lengh M 96 had a minimum sight setting of 300 meters. Now at 200 yards (the distance I shoot most often) the gun is perfectly zerod when the rear sight ladder is set at about half-way between the closest and longest range settings. That gives me some room to move it back to zero at 100 yards and still gives me room for adjustment for shoots at 300 or 400 or 500 yards. Of course, none of the range markings on the sight itself correspond with the settings anymore. I believe my 200 yard zero is actually at the "500 meter" setting.

I reccomend the +1.5, based on my experience. I think it would work better and give you more room for adjustments than a taller sight.

The front posts I replaced on mine were dove tailed in shape.

That required the replacements to be filed, ground, etc.

Are the new ones being sold already dove tailed? Does anyone know?

I put a taller front sight on my M96 also, bought it out of Shotgun News years ago, can't remember who from but the magazine is a really good one for getting parts for surplus rifles.
