History Channel's "Top Shot" on Sunday night

Yep it is too bad Jim got robbed before the challenge that was right up his alley.
Next person to say rat fink should get punched in the face
The whole time he kept going on and on I was thinking he needed his nose broke. Caleb was a gentleman & let it go but there have been a lot of folks I have known that would have dropped him in his tracks.

What bothers me is the lack of information about the weapons: Caliber, bullet weight, history, etc.

I agree. I thought with it being on the History Channel it would have something to do with, you know, history.

I think they could take the show down to 30 minutes and do 10 minutes on the weapons, 10 on the team challenge, and 10 on the elimination. They could cut out the other 30 minutes of useless nonsense.

Also, I'm not too impressed with some of these guys shooting ability. I was expecting something miraculous, but on a good day I bet most practiced shooters could do equally as well or better than some of their performances. The flintlock episode cemented that feeling for me.

way too much drama, its like survival or something. I wish they would focus more on the weapons and the shooting.

These folks had to take a chunk out of their lives to do this. Time away from their families and time away from their paying jobs. How long did they have to spend for this and were they paid for their time whether they made it to the end or not?

How many of us could take the time off to do this?

You should go read the bios on them at The History Channel's website. Most of them have very good shooting credentials. Frankly, one of the things the show fell down on was explaining the shooting credentials of the contestants. At least a handful of the contestants are USPSA Masters or Grand Masters, Tara Poremba is ranked as a Distinguished pistol shooter, Jim Sinclair is ranked in the top 100 competitors by the CMP for competing in the National Garand, Springfield, and Vintage Military division.

That's what I could just find with a couple of quick Google searches.

Some of them are quite loud about their "Credentials"

"Im a grand master! and im using a long bow... might as well settle it with a game of pool"

hahahahahaha

Yeah, no kidding. The show is called "Top Shot", not top USPSA shooter.....

I watch the show because I am just that addicted to guns and shooting. However, the format is aweful. Yes it does expose people to guns and shooting but you know what, if everyone of the members here put up on their facebook pages photos and video of themselves shooting, competing, enjoying their sport, we would collectively reach a lot more people with much better content than this show ever will. There are a lot of ways to educate people about and interest people in the firearms sports. I to it all the time and spend hundreds if not thousands each year introducing new shooters to firearms. History Channel can do better. Let's hope season 2 is different.

My wife actually said she thought it would be cool if they showed footage of the different shooters competing in their different disciplines.

I agree with this. Would of been cool to show the IPSC, USPSA, 3 Gun events (never heard of 3-Gun until 2 days ago) and rifle events. I just recently started looking into IDPA and such, watching on Youtube and they look very cool. Want to watch one in person shortly.

I think that would of went over very well with some of those events and show what their specialties are. At episode 2 they could then show one of the competitors shooting for like 30 seconds to a full minute or so. Or a professional event with the weapons that they will be shooting for the episode, much more informative and kind of a necessity for a channel like History I think. Those handgun speed shooting events are really cool.

I don't like the reality format too much, but then again if it gets more viewers and can keep them, then it's better in the long run. I don't get Outdoor Ch. or the other one mentioned that shows shooting shows, I know I'd watch most of them if I could (are they on Rapidshare or similar?).

A month ago I tried to set up my family and friends to go to the range for shooting for my birthday. Well we went last Saturday. A week before I had to show my mom how to handle the handguns and go over the range rules. I tried to time it so she could see the 2nd episode of Top Shot since it had to do with a semi-auto pistol (Beretta 92FS). It was replaying and I put it on in the kitchen and set the pistols on the dinning room table so she could look at them and get a little used to seeing them. I waited until that episode was over to go over things. She had a fun time and wants to go again , she didn't know if she would like shooting, but I was 99% sure she would (who wouldn't right?). I can't say for sure, but I think the show helped a little bit, since I watched it with her and brought up a few things here and there. She is going to retire "up north" and for safety sake I think she should have one gun for sure for protection. Now she is at least open to it.

I also hope they change the format a little in Season 2, well a lot, but realistically if they show more shooting that would be great.

I'm actually pretty impressed with the ability of all these shooters. Considering the variety of firearms/weapons and the courses, I think they do quite well. They're using sights that aren't adjusted for them individually. Ranges/courses they've never practiced on before. Shooting under constraints (I would have done pretty poorly on the memory course much less the zipline).

I always find it interesting that forums are filled with amazing shooters, but when I go to the range, I see mainly poor shots. And I'm not talking about obvious noobs who are just staring out. One range I visit regularly, the owner is always complaining about a guy who dresses head to toe in tactical gear and proceeds to shoot up the wood 2x1s holding the target cardboard.

I consider myself a decent marksmen, but don't think I'd be able to hang with these contestants.

How long did they have to spend for this

Each eposode took three days to film. I was talking to Jim about it last week and his stories are interesting. The thirty day comment is not correct as he was out at the site for three weeks. The remaining were out there much longer.

Due to the signed agreements, certain things cannot be discussed, nor does he know who won for sure. He used his vacation time from his job. No mention of payment and from what i gather, you are on your on for financing. They pay expenses. All in all, he said it was a positive experience.

Quite frankly he's one of the nicest people you would want to meet and a great stockmaker....Still would love to have him make one for me.

i'm just curious...if they are paying expenses and they are feeding and housing you, what would you have to finance? sounds like an interesting expense paid vacation with lousy sleeping arrangements...bunk beds???

You still have to cover your mortgage, car loans, electric bill, etc.

how would that differ from when you would take a normal (non-competitive) vacation?

this way you're not paying for airfare, car rental, food, lodging or entertainment

Well, it's not at Disneyland and I don't have my kids with me, for starters. Whether or not that's a bad thing is up to each of you to decide. :)

that could be a tough choice, but i was referring to having to pay your bills while on vacation ;)

What? No complaints about drama? Has everyone except me stopped watching? :D

FWIW, it was pretty cool to see Lead Dispencer as the expert for tonight's show, and next week's show looks really cool.

they over-gamed the elimination match trying to "drop" Kelly...he really is good at making the small adjustments on the fly to correct his shooting.

i was really disappointed in the cowboy...he was just too grooved into his shooting and couldn't adapt to a different gun

it was funny that both guys didn't know how to play poker :D
