Another Benelli followed me home yesterday, an HK-marked M1 Field, s/n M0863XX. It's not like any M1 Field I've ever seen. At first glance, I thought it was an M1 Tactical that somebody put a 24" Field barrel on. The stock assembly and fore-end retaining cap are identical to the ones on the M1 Tactical: same style sling attachment points and recoil pad. But it's got a three-round magazine tube with internal magazine tube plug. The end of the tube is sort of crimped or rolled over to keep the plug in, so it doesn't look like it'll take a magazine extension without a main tube replacement.

Anybody have any more information on this model?

Also, I want to get inside the magazine tube to give it a good cleaning. I sprayed some CLP in there and it came out rust-colored. I probably need to replace the magazine spring: after fully loading the shotgun with A-Zoom snap-caps then simulating firing of all rounds by squeezing the trigger and manually cycling the action, I had the bolt lock open a couple times as if the gun were empty, when there was still a round left in the mag tube.

Any suggestions?

Can you post a picture? Usually the end of the magtube has the big piece where the sling swivel is, that uncaps, and you can put the 2 (default extension on the Tacticals) or the 4 rd tube. Here's the typical M1 Field...is yours different looking?

I never seen this but maybe it's a long shot, maybe the rounds are getting caught inside the tube (rust??) and not going all the way back, so the gun locks open because it thinks it's empty?

Check out www.hkpro.com I don't know how many guys there have the pre-ban Fields, but a lot have the HK-marked pre-bans in general, so may be able to help. Good luck.

IIRC on my M1 Practical (which was configured without the mag extension when sold - mag extension came in a kit that the buyer put on), there was a friction fit snap-ring type plug at the end of the gun's mag. It was rounded at the end shaped much like a mag follower with a split. This had to be removed using a snap ring tool or a pair of needle nose pliers before installing the mag extension. Maybe this is what you are seeing as being crimped or rolled over.

"...I had the bolt lock open a couple times as if the gun were empty, when there was still a round left in the mag tube."

Could possibly be the mag spring is weak and is not applying enough force (combined witht he possibly heavier mass of the A-Zoom) to eject the last round out of the mag fast enough. (I've never tried a 12 ga A-Zoom so am not sure how they compare in weight with a regular round. I'm using plastic HK snap-caps.)

Mine is exactly the same ,M0863xx, called the M1 Super 90. I have the manual if you need info. It does not list a mag tube extension. When you replace the fore end there are two washers, the FLAT one must be against the plastic !!! Don't woory about the snap caps try shooting it. It's a really fine shotgun.
