I am thinking of getting my first "upscale" semi-auto this year.

I interested in either 9mm or .40, and it will be used as a CCW, so the smaller and lighter -- the better.

My three basic picks so far are:

*** HK P2000 SK

*** HK USP COMPACT

*** SIG P239

I welcome all feedback and comments as to which of the above would make the best overall carry piece.

:D :uhoh: :D

Thanks.

I can only comment on the two H&Ks having owned one and currently own the other. The USPC isn't a bad deal but I would probably go with the P-2000 instead. A little thick in the grip for me. The 2000 SK LEM trigger is fantastic and so is the gun. Scary accurate. Holsters are a little hard to come by, though. The SK is smaller and lighter than the 239 and will allow the use of full-size USP C magazines. The 2000SK is ambidextrous and has interchangable backstraps. The 239 can only use proprietary single stack mags (although I hear there are 10 rounders for the 239).

The 239 isn't available in the DAK trigger (not enough room in the frame). The 239 has the advantage of a more normal magazine release.

If you buy anything with either DAK or LEM, you may short stroke the triggers on other guns if you get used to the really short trigger reset.

I would go with P-2000 or P-2000SK

When you're dealing with such quality makes/models, it should really come down to how the gun fits YOU. The Sig folks will naturally reccommend the Sig and the HK guys will recommend the HK. Antis of each will recommend the other or a different one all together. Chose the one that is most comfortable for YOU and that YOU like the best.
I've looked into these same models and found the P2000SK to be one of the most comfortable autos I've ever held. I'd choose that one.

Can't tell you about the other two, but I reviewed the P2000SK for Women and Guns earlier this year.

The gun managed to feel both solid and lightweight, not an easy job for the designers.

I don't like the mag release, but it could be that I'm persnickety. I couldn't activate it with one finger or one thumb -- it took kind of a downward pinch to get the mag to drop for me. That could have been just a stiff spring, but the release tends to seesaw and catch on the other side, so I dunno.

I loved the LEM trigger. It is light, smooth, and has an amazingly short reset for quick follow up shots. Heard a rumor that H&K will be offering P2000SK's with traditional DA/SA triggers as well as with LEM triggers; if so, I'd opt for the LEM trigger every time.

I liked the option of changing the grip panels to fit different sized hands. To my mind, an essentially unchangeable grip size is the biggest drawback of polymer framed guns, so it was nice to see that H&K has figured out a solution for that one.

No problems with reliability or quality of course.

Love that it can be easily used left handed, none of this "mostly ambidextrous" crap that has people doing all sorts of odd funky things to force a really incompatible design to work for them. Wonderful gun for learning to shoot with either hand, or to use to teach a lefty if you yourself are a righty -- everything is really-and-truly the same.

PAX- the mag release took a lot of getting used to for me as well. For the first 300 rounds I used my trigger finger to release the magazine because it was so stiff. After the release got broken in- much easier. I still need to work with the gun some more. I had a bum magazine which caused two double-feeds in about 50 rounds. Tap, rack, bang was made very difficult by my unfamiliarity with the magazine release. I think it will come with practice.

The 2000SK with it's LEM trigger and unusual magazine release is a prime example of why you shouldn't hop from gun to gun for LE or self defense. If I am able to carry the SK on duty, I plan on carrying it exclusively for defensive purposes ESPECIALLY because of the trigger. I have been practicing with the SK a lot recently. When I went out to shoot one of our standard issue autopistols, I kept short-stroking the trigger expecting it to reset after 1/4 inch. Didn't work too well.

Me, I have loved the HK mag relaease since I bought my P7M8 in '88 nad have liked the USP line so much I have 5 of them :D Choosing from your options, I'd go w/ the P2000 only because I don't have one yet!

Thanks for the replies!

What is the going price for the HK P2000SK?

Also, is the HK P2000SK easy to locate, or is it a "hard to find" model?

The SK is a bit hard to find i.e. not everywhere. About half the stores in my area have them. I paid $900 with tax. :what: :what: :what:

Could have saved about $150 off that if I had known that my police supply store (I am in LE) had started carrying them. :banghead:

All indications are that if you shop around you can do considerably better than I did. :D

i'm a big fan of the USPc! they can be found at pretty good prices these days. i bought my last one brand new with a stainless slide for $599!

the P2000 looks and feels great though i perfer the USPc in my hands.

the sig P239 is a VERY nice gun and definatly deserves to be mentioned with the other two. capacity is a drawback. both the other two have higher capacity possiblilties.

all in all i'd say...close your eyes and pick one and you'd end up with the right one :)

I don't have any experience with the HKs. I do own a 239, and I much prefer the 225 to the 239. They are very similar in size but the 225 fits my hand much better. If you end up leaning towards the 239 give the 225 a look as well.

hope this helps,
waterhouse

Why not look at the Walther P99c AS or QA? These are great pistols.

I carry one every once in while, and it is light, ACCURATE and 100% reliable.

$200 less than a 2000SK
at least $150 less than a USP C (Which I have)
about the same as Sig P239 (Which my wife carries).

Take a look, go over to the Walther forums for more discussion :)

Plus it's great looking :D

IMO, the better Sig comparison to the H&Ks would be the SigPro. It's a sweet shooter and quite ergonomic. And also a great deal at around $399.

:D

Chupacabra- I think the SigPro is way too big for concealed carry. I hear rumors that there is a compact version on the way. THAT would be cool.

Extremist - I think the Walther subcompact is ugly. Sorry! If it had the lines of the P-99 vs. the SW-99 I would like it. I just hate the SW-99's appearance. The triggerguard is an offense against all that is holy! :D Okay, maybe it isn't that bad, but lord knows it isn't good either. One thing to consider- last time I was in a gun shop looking at the Walther P-99 series, I found out that while S&W offers a lifetime warranty, the Walther warranty is only a year or two. Does the subcompact have the S&W warranty?

Waterhouse- the 225 should have been made in .40. The 239 is too . . . swoopy in my opinion. My 225 would be the second to last gun sold in a time of crisis. My 228 is last.
