I had originally narrowed down my next off duty gun purchase to the Sig P228 and the P239. I went to a gun shop that had both Sigs and an HK USP Compact 9mm (I used to have a USP 45 compact, but sold it cause it was expenzive to shoot). So I am now itching to get a new 9mm to carry off duty. I am glad that I got to put the P239 and P228 side by side, because I really do not like the feel of the P239. I really like the P228 despite it being somewhat large. The dealer then pointed me in the direction of a new USP 9mm Compact. I really liked it (it is a little smaller and a little lighter than the P228), but I cannot decide between the USP Compact 9mm and the P228. Anyone with experience with either or both of these guns? Any issues with the internal safety on the HK's (causing malfunctions, ect)? I greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Frank1991,

I've not fired the HK but do know that they make an excellent product. Having said that, I really like the Sig P228 and really like Sigarms' customer service. Its my understanding that HK's customer service is lacking in comparison.

I have the P225 and the P228 is next on my list.

All the best,

Having owned both of the above mentioned firearms. I sold the HK and kept the P228. The Sig will be part of my collection for life.

Only other thing to take in to consideration,

Jack Bauer on 24 switched from the P228 (seasons one and two) to the HK USP Compact (seasons three and four).

Have an HK USO40 Full Size and a bunch of SIGS incuding a 228 & 226.

IMO, the SIGS shoot softer in .40 and their stock triggers are far superior to the H&K. H&K's aare good handguns without a doubt but a SIG is a SIG!

It all depends on how you want to carry it. If you're going to go DA/SA with the H&K then get the Sig. H&K's DA pull is terrible, but as a totally SA gun it's preferable to the Sig. You might also want to look at the same guns with H&K's LEM trigger and Sig's DAK. They're DAO but smooth and light.

That's a tough choice! Two of the best compact 9mm handguns on the market and you gotta pick one. *sigh* Whatchya gonna do.

I think I'd go with the USP because it can be carried "cocked & locked." However, Sigs do have really good DA triggers. Both have the same mag capacity (13 I think).

Oh heck! Flip a coin! :D

Man...if I based all my gun-buying decisions on what TV people carried, I'd have a closet full o' Deagles! :)

I've handled both, and you can't go wrong with either. Both are utterly reliable and more accurate than you'll ever need. In my hands, the Sig was *slightly* more accurate, but that may have been due to the ergonomics.

The BIG difference is the trigger. The Sig is much smoother on the DA pull, with a cleaner break on the SA. Still, I don't knock the HK, it just lacks some "elegance." At least you're not throwing your money away on a silly Glock :neener:

Go with what fits your hand. I've always wanted a sig, but the double stacks are too wide and the trigger too far. I love the usp 40 compact because it fits and it shoots and shoots and shoots...

Did I mention it just keeps shooting not matter what I feed it and reguardless of how often (or not) I clean it?

If you can shoot them side by side, you'll figure out really fast which one works for you.

Just a thought...

You can install what's known as a "short" trigger on the Sig if necessary. Sig makes that option available, as well.

After years of shooting revolvers, .38's and .357's, my wife decided she wanted a 9mm auto. She liked my HK USP Tact .45, but it was too large for her; besides, she wanted a 9mm. She could not operate my S&W 5906 easily, so we went to our favorite gun shop, and she held and fiddled with quite a selection.

In the end, there was only one that she could operate comfortably; from racking the slide, to releasing the slide with the latch: an HK USP Compact 9mm. That was over two years ago, I she couldn't be happier.

my 2¢ -

As said in the other thread I love my 228. For CCW purposes, I would look at the H&K P-2000. It is one of the most comfortable pistols I have ever handled. I didn't care much for the USP Compact (carried one for a year) but like the P-2000. Interchangable backstraps, ambi mag and slide releases, etc. etc.

Try the P-2000 out.
