I've got this dilema, I have always wanted a HK P7 of some variety and see now that they are no longer being made. But at the same time I also want a higher end 1911, like a SA MC Operator or TRP Operator.

So considering that both will set me back $1K plus, which should I pick up first?

Steve

Get the HKP7 series. Like you said they have been discontinued and they are a spectacular firearm.

The 1911 will be around for quite some time.

Get the P7. It's a wonderful and unique firearm. Plus, since they went out of production this year, supply is going to get short quick, and prices will only go up with time.

You can get a 1911 later...they'll probably be making those for a couple of more years at least ;)

I'll agree with everyone and say get the P7 . . . but also you don't have to spend 1K plus on one. I've got 3 PSPs and 1 P7M8, the average price for the 4 was about $650 a piece. Now I'd never sell them for that, but my point is that there are deals out there if you keep your eyes open.

Both

Get both, but I'd get the P7 first. The reason is that they are no longer made, and the price is only going to climb. 1911s are being made by everyone, and while they as good or better than the P7 (depending on your POV and persona preference), they are likely to stay at the current price point for quite a while, drifting upwards with inflation.

Both are very good guns.

If you can get a chance to shoot a P7M8, either by renting one or having a friend let you shoot one, then buy it if you like it. If you don't like it, then go ahead and get your 1911. My second pistol was a P7M8 which I was able to rent a couple of time before buying. My third pistol was a 1911 (Valtro). Very happy with both and both are my two favorite pistols.:D

Get the P7, either the P7M8 or PSP. Right now you can still get great deals on the German police trade in PSP's. I have both models and they are equally great. One goes to the range with me everytime. It just a unique, accurate and reliable pistol and one of the softest shooting 9MM's I own.

Lack of sales. The P7 is a heavy, single stack, 9mm, that uses a reasonably odd method of operation, that costs just shy of a testicle to buy.

All that being said I love them. They are spectacular guns and make a fine CCW firearm, have huge pride of ownership, a spectacular trigger, are as accurate as some target grade autos, feel as if they were built from a solid brick of steel and are reliable to a fault. The fact the the magazines are crafted and forged on the milky white backs of virgins in the mountains of Tibet is just a bonus.....................Ok so that forged in Tibet thing may not be true but I like to believe it is, since at $50.00 a magazine for 8 round is a bit steep. :uhoh: I have 10 do the math.

Take your wife's jewelry down to the pawn shop and raise some cash. Buy both after you explain you did it for her safety and security I am sure she will understand and support your decision.

But seriously I own both of the pistols that interest you and strongly endorse both as great pistols. The HK P7M8 is superior to the older PSP, as it has the heat shield and the release by the trigger guard. Some PSPs have come in from Europe recently for around $900. The Springfield should be easy to find for awhile. The MC Operator is excellent, as is the Kimber Warrior for that matter. However I think you will be able to find those easier down the line. So if you know where an HK is right now, buy it.

PS: If you do hock your wife's jewelry don't tell her it was my idea. :p

I've got a P7PSP that's been Robar'd (NP3 frame, Roguard black slide) and rides about in a VM2. There's a second P7PSP that is now being hoarded as a parts gun.

It must just be me but, unless I was collecting rather than viewing it as a tool, I would stay clear of any P7 variation just because it's been discontinued.

I view discontinuation as a massive reason not to get the P7 although I do admit I like it a lot. I now carry a P239 more than the P7 and chances are I'll retire both P7's much like H&K did.

Maybe I'll bundle the 2 P7's with my P225 and make somebody an offer...
On second thought, probably not.

I'd say go for the P7 first. In fact, I just picked up my 3rd P7 series last night. It's an M8. I already have a PSP and M13. The 1911 guns you list will likely be available in vastly larger numbers compared to P7 guns.

P7

1. You will like it.
2. If you don't you will not lose money selling it.

Only downside is, like many others, you will not be content with one. Wait until you start eyeing P7M13s (9mm, 13 round) and P7M10s (.40 S&W, 10 round). Visit www.parkcitiestactical.com for "The Cult of The P7".
Then start working overtime...

By the way even though the HK P7M8 is out of production. It is still on the HK website available as a new gun.

It's not out of production. It is being produced from time-to-time in 1,000 unit runs.

Get the one you can get the best deal on first & then quickly follow up w/ finding the other at a good deal too! Me, I got my P7M8 before I got my 1911. But now I'm glad I have both

Thanks for all of the replies.

I just picked up my first P7M8 yesterday and i think that i've found my calling.

I'm liking it soo much that I am now looking for another, for my wife.

But don't worry a 1911 will find it's way back into my hands sometime next year. I'm thinking about a Colt Combat Commander in Stainless steel.
