I have decided to buy one kick ass auto shotgun and have narrowed it down to either an HK tactical unit or the FN self loading police unit.I like the FN holds eight rounds but I can get a used HK for $300 cheaper than a new FN.
Any thoughts on either of these?

The gun will likely be a safe queen that gets shot occaisionally.I have other HD ones in service and this is more of a WANT than anything else.

I can't comment on the HK as I've never used one.

I picked up a new FN SLP Mark1 several months back and have really enjoyed it. My review of it can be found here on my site. I've got a two day tactical refresher course coming up at the end of this month and it will be the first time I've had it along for a course. The range time I've put in with it, to date, has been nothing less than great. After my range buddy got his hands on it, he found a used Winchester SX2 (same gun, different name on it). He was a dedicated pump shooter right up until then. :D

Edit: I picked up this several weeks ago but haven't used it yet. I got it for when I have a night shoot course.

The HK will be a Fabarms built gun. Absolutely nothing wrong with them, but you will NOT find any aftermarket parts for them-the Benelli/Beretta mag extensions seem to work just fine on Fabarms guns. I have a HK/Fabarms "tactical" SG with a folding stock, runs quite well, and has typical soft gas operated recoil.
My only reason for not using it for real, is that if something breaks, I don't know where I might find parts. On the other hand, the gun is robustly built and nothing seems to be breaking.
The FN semis are great(they are the Winchester design-or is the Winchester an FN design?). In any case I think that you will find it difficult not to like the FN SLP series. Mine gets a LOT of work, only semi I like as well is the Benelli/Beretta early series, and those for weight, rather the lack thereof. When I am in a snooty mood, I use my Browning A-5 cut down for serious social intercourse.
For my money, use your money for the FN.

i couldn't decide between the FN 18" SLP or the 22" Mk-1, because i really like the ghost ring sights of the SLP but the Mk-1's larger magazine kept calling to me.

i finally got both. the SLP is my HD gun, the sights align perfectly when i shoulder it and it is perfect around the house. i'm looking at using the Mk-1 in 3-gun. it does seem a little front heavy...especially with the EOTech i have on the rail, but i have a C-More to try or i could even shoot it stock.

i've tried the Benelli and the FN just felt better to me when shooting them together

Well know here's how it went down.I saw the HK and put it on layaway.I had been waiting for a year for my local gunshop to get the FN and had given up on it.The very next day the FN was on the shelf.Talk about wanting to slap someone.
Now I think the HK is a fine piece, but I am trying not to justify getting both of them. It's doable but it would take a while on lay away and quash any other finds that come along for a while.
What to do...........?

if you cant get the layaway money back towards the fn SLP the HK should be alright. use part of the money extra and buy a ton of ammo and be done with it

I went back and compared both of them side by side today.I have to say the HK is better to me in every way except capacity.A mag extension will make it almost even.
The HK is lighter, has hi-viz sights around the ghost ring, and just feels better against my cheek(I believe it is shorter from stock to reciever or feels that way.My arms arent as far away with it).I am satisfied I made the right choice.
I can switch the layaway if I want.My local gun store is excellent and I have developed a good relationship/friendship with the owner.
I look forward to blasting with it soon I hope.Come on tax refund!

better...except the small detail of having shot neither. By all accounts the FN SLP is pretty much the sweetest defensive semi going. That is my impression at least.
