I'm trying to decide between a SIG P228 or a HK USP.

P228

For:
Fits my hand
Like the balance
Reliable
Well built
Affordable mags

Against:
Finish
Weight
Decocker position

HK USP

For:
Fits my hand
Like the balance
Reliable
Built like a tank
Finish
Decocker position

Against:
More expensive
Mags really expensive

Does anyone have first hand experience with both? Any pics to help tip the scales towards your favorite?

Dude, that's a really tough choice. Both are equally good IMO.

Flip a coin.

:D

But if you are on a budget, the Sig is probably the better choice.

Yep, I've got experience with both. Both pistols are outstanding. The P228 is the best in the SIG lineup IMO. The USP compacts are more comparable in size to the 228. I personally give the nod to the USP's because of the ability to go cocked and locked. If you plan on decocking and going DA/SA the SIG has the advantage of a DA trigger. If this is going to be a personal protection weapon I don't think you should let cost be the deciding factor. If at all possible you should try to shoot both before buying. Either way you'll be well suited with either pistol.

I've shot a couple Sigs and never liked the manual of arms as well as the USP. I'd go with the USP without question. Besides, mag prices should hopefully come down a bit now since the AWB ended.

I've got 3 Sigs (P220, P226 and a P2340 sigpro) now and 2 USPs (a full size .45 and a compact .40 S&W) and I have to say that both brands are excellent and that you aren't going to go wrong with either one. Mysefl, I prefer my USPs a little more since I was originally a 1911 shooter, the controls of the USP work a little better for me. Here's a tip, instead of trying to release the magazine with your thumb, try your trigger finger instead. It's FAST and a lot easier than having to shift your grip. ;) I think though the biggest selling point for me is the large trigger guard and the ability to be carried cocked and locked. When the winters get down to -30 degrees, I can still get a heavy glove into the trigger and not worry about blocking the trigger reset as well.

Go with what you like the best....

If the H&K is really your preference a hundred or 2 hundred extra bucks is not going to make a difference a few years down the road....
Get the gun that you want, otherwise, you'll regret it......

And if the Sig is what you choose, go with it and save some money, but it sounds like your leaning towards the H&K....

I've got an H&K P2000 .40 that I paid dearly for but I love the gun and I know it is durable, realible, accurate and is going to be there whenever I need it....
I could have paid less for a good gun but I wouldnt have gotten the one I wanted.............

I've also got 2 new mags on the way......drf

As stated previously, the HK USP9 Compact would be a better comparison. The 9mm in a standard USP is kinda overbuilt, like building a tank to fire a 30mm cannon. You'd be better off in a .45 for the full size.

Anyway..I've shot both and ended up getting the USP Compact. I really like the corrosion resistance and it does have accessory rails on the frame if I should ever need them. Plus I like the cocked n locked feature.

However, the HK can't touch the SIG when it comes to a smooth trigger.

No matter what you choose, both are fine pistols and will definitely keep their resale value.

I have both and consider them to be excellent pistols. IMO, both are very reliable with a wide variety of ammunition. I prefer the trigger and the grip on the Sig, so it gets a slight edge on the HK.

I'll recommend the HK. It is easier to transition from an HK to a 1911. You'll probably end up buying a 1911 that is if you don't have one yet. The price difference after all isn't that bad compared with the Sigs.

It sounds like the only "con" to your analysis is $$$. If money is not an issue, than the decision is clear....H&K

I made that same decision on a P2000 with no regrets.

H&K All The Way!

Very Good Info Given!

Don't let a few dollars stop ya!

I have a Compact Stainless 45 USP. And LOVE it!!!!

Can't compare the 228 with the USP9, but I've shot both the USP45 and the Sig 220....USP hands down- it has cocked and locked option, (seemed like) sturdier construction, it was more accurate, and generally fit me better. YMMV.

www.impactguns.com prices both the USP and the 22x series very close, with the 226 being $20 more than the USP9.

I've shot both but I own & carry a USP (45Fv2).

You really can't go wrong with either as has been mentioned. At this point it is probably down to which one fits your hand better than the other & points more naturally.

The P228 and the USP 9 compact really are 2 very good 9mm compacts. I have the P228, love it, and that would be my choice, but the USP 9c is also very good.

I own 4 Sigs and have spent some time shooting the USP 9 and USP 45 models.

Both have great qualities to them and as of late Sig has saturated the used pistol market with Factory Refurbished pistols. They can be found from 4-500 dollars with a little cosmetic wear and 97-98 percent internals.

The best bang for you buck is definetly the Sig, IMHO. The money you save from buying the USP can be spent on range time and ammo. :)

Warning : Read the Signature line below. There can never just be one Sig.

I've got both - the Sig sits in the safe - the H&K goes where I go. The H&K points much better for me, when I bring it up to fire the sights are very close to being right - I haven't found another handgun that does this.
