Thanks for everyones replies to my "what to get for $1000". I think I have narrowed my choice down to the HK USP Compact. I am thinking the .45, but would consider the .40, especially if the 10rd limit for the magazines expires. How hard is it to change over to the .357Sig? I assume just a barrel change? Does anyone know where to find the best price on a USP Compact? Skunk, why did you get rid of yours? Thanks in advance.

Changing the .40compact over to .357sig is REALLY easy. All it requires is a barrell change.

:D

I've seen some okay deals on Gunbroker.com in the past. You might also want to check out the buy/sell forum too.

magnumtc,

I bought my usp40c for $550 new. This was when they had just come out. I found it in a shop in Orem, Utah called Vanwagenen's. You'll be hard pressed to find one that cheap now. However, if you watch the classifieds, deals do pop up from time to time. I've seen them go beteen $650 and $800 new these days. Good luck, it is a great little pistol and one I'll never get rid of. I would recommend either finding one with night sights, or budgeting the money to add them.

Thanks again for the replies. I just went and looked at them at a local gunshop. They were going for $729 for the non stainless slide and $759 for the stainless model. They did not have any with night sights. I compared them to the Sig 229 and this is what I came up with. The Sig had the better trigger, especially double action. Since I will probably carry cocked-and locked, this is of little concern. Advantage Sig. The HK felt much better in my hand. The Sig was blocky and seemed to have a much larger grip. Advantage HK. The HK had the better mag release. Advantage HK. I preferred the Sig sights to the HK, but will probably change them out anyways to Trijicons or MMC's. Capacity is the same with both. Overall, I was more impressed with the HK. The Sigs were about $100 less in price. Now, a couple of questions. Can you still use the HK safety with the double action pull? Is it still possible to thumb cock the HK? Were there ever standard capacity pre-ban mags for the USP Compacts? Still undecided about the caliber. How accurate is your USP40C? If the mag ban stays, I will get the .45acp. If it expires I will go 40 an use the 12 rd mags. With 10rd mags, I see no advantage to the .40 unless pre-bans are available. With full caps, 12+1 is and advantage and I would probably not carry a spare mag.

My usp40c is more accurate than I am. Let me try to put that into numbers. At a measured 50' with my reloads it will make one big hole with a few fliers (about 1.5 to 2") if I shoot from a rest and take my time. The other neat thing is this pistol eats anything! I have shot very underpowered reloads and full power golden sabers in the same session and even the same mag--no failures! I won't try to convince you as to caliber. .40 vs. .45 is a non arguement for me. Either one will do what you want it to. I just happened to have .40 dies on hand and .40usp's were out long before thier .45 brothers. So I have the .40. My bet is that the .45 recoils less if that matters to you. Whatever you chose, you will enjoy it. It is a remarkable design and a fun pistol to shoot.
