Friend of mine brought his USP to the range last night, and we blew through a few boxes with all the guns we brought.

He let me try his USP for a few magazines. All I can say is yuck. Wouldn't want one, and if you gave me one, I'd sell it and buy something else.

There wasn't any one thing, I just didn't like the whole package. I'm not sure if the sights were the stock sights, but the rear gap was a good quarter-mile wide, and then the front site was this thin little stick with the most microscopic white dot on it. The polymer didn't have enough gripping surface for me, so it felt like it was going to squirt out of my hands

We tried shooting in lowlight, and with the acres of open space in the rear site, it was hard to find the front quickly, make sure equal amounts of light were on both sides, etc.

I'm sure it is a marvel of German engineering and reliability, but I'll pass. I did like the safety/decocker thing, thought it was clever, wish my 1911 had one... (I know, heresy. My M457 has one, I like it)...

Interesting observation. Mine is just the opposite. I often carry a USP compact in .40 and .45 as my CCW. Absolutely love both of them. IMHO HK's are among the top two or three handguns made. Ergonomics are great, disassembly is easy, accuracy is excellent. Only thing I would change is the price tag - kinda steep.

All in all, I'd take an HK over almost any other CCW.

well that's okay if you don't like it. I don't like 1911 either, they jam, so are mine, so are other people :D

Local sheriffs are issued HK USP 40. I asked one of them when I saw one waiting in line for food. His response was "I love it!"

Those sights must be aftermarket. Target acquisition with my USPs is quick and easy, and the visible gap between the two sides of the rear notch and the front sight post is minimal on mine.

My God! you must have gigantic mits! Most people think the USP are on the large size. I love my HKs but to each their own.

No, I have small hands actually, can't use a glock at all. It just felt too smooth, even with the texturing.

I definitely coulnd't have handled it being any larger.

It appears that people either love or hate the H&K USP. I know several people who feel that they are the best handgun out there, but I know just as many, myself included, who do not care for them. I am convinced that they are fine guns but I do not care for the grip angle or the high bore axis. I do like the idea that it can be carried cocked and locked, but also as a traditional double action. I also like the fact that the safety/decocker lever is mounted on the frame and not the slide. For my taste they seem to be a bit overpriced. I would carry one if I had to but it would not be my first choice.

I have a USP 9 and several Glocks. I like Glocks better but i still like HK. The texture is definately more aggresive than Glocks. I wouldnt refer to it as smooth.

When I was shopping for my last handgun, I examined a USP and "cheese grater" would be an apt description. The employee showing me what was available mentioned that some people sand down the surface of the grips. Sounds like someone might have done it a little too well in this case.

I have had a USP .40 since they first came out and love it. Feels great and reliable. But, that is why there are so many differnt guns on the market.

I didn't ask if it was sanded, hadn't really even occurred to me that it would ever come up.

But hey, I don't hate it, I just don't like it. There's a difference... :)

So apparently you'd like a 40 cal pistol with a cinderblock magwell wrapped with a knobby tire? Cuz that's what a USP feels like to me.

Sounds like a deal, just as long as it isn't an HK USP in .40... I should've tried skateboard tape, it would've had more grip...

I also think somebody sanded the grips down. On the last USP40 I shot the checkering made my hands into hamburger after a box. See if you can get another to compare it to. What you are describing is not the norm for those guns
