I haven't used the HKS speedloaders, but have used a Safariland Comp I.

The thing I don't like about the Safariland is the charging procedure (requiring a table-top, sometimes dropping a round while turning the loader over).

Is the procedure any different with the HKS?

All you do with the HKS is turn the knob counterclockwise so the little retaining fingers are out of the holes, drop your cartridges in, and turn the knob back to retain them. You will find that they jiggle quite a bit; this is normal.

...or you could just load your Comp-1 with the cartridges facing up.

1. hold the load with the holes facing up
2. place shells into holes
3. while holding body of loader, push up on knob and twist to lock shells in place.

it's the same as the HKS method, you just press the knob inward while turning the knob.

The HKS is the way to go, IMHO. When I took LFI-1 with a revolver, I not only kept up the pace in a class of auto shooters, but I took the top score in the class. The HKS is very reliable, and is the loader least likely to end up with rounds on the ground either coming or going (IMHO, of course, others may differ). The charging (and unlocking) method is anvil-simple, FWIW.

BTW, the november 2008 issue of "guns" magazine has a discussion of the different makes of loader by Ayoob that is good reading, again, FWIW.
