I saw on another forum where one of the smaller ammo makers had some Grendel ammo in stock. I have been shooting their stuff for a while now, but this was a new bullet I had not tried and so was quite pleased when I managed to snag 2 boxes loaded with Maker Bullets 110 gr. REX.

I got to the range for a quick verification of zero and to chrono the ammo. Shooting from the bench is not where I excel. This was rather down and dirty but managed a bimodal 1.5 moa that was slightly off center from straddling my POA and with a slight adjustment, was good to go.

While I always have plans as to what I think may happen in the field, they rarely go as I expect and this hunt was no exception. The first was a daylight hog showing up before I was even really ready. Later, as I was loading the hog up in my truck (in the field), light on, cussing and moaning because I was trying to do most of the work without my left hand (braced), a sounder showed up and started grazing close by. I shot at them for a while and the survivors ran off, but only into the next field, so I went after them. 3/4 of a mile into the chase, gave up and headed back to the truck, only to find another sounder close by. I dropped one from this group (the rest ran into the cattle) and that I later tabulated was my 1500th hog kill. Got all the dead pigs loaded up and headed to deposit them in the bone yard on the next property and ran into a group of hogs there, apparently, the same group I had killed a couple from on the previous hunt.

I hope you enjoy the video. There is a goodly amount of decent shooting, but not a lot of wasted ammo.

Congrats on number 1500 and thanks for the video. I only have 1499 to go to reach 1500, (grin). Just recently shot my first hog down in northern Pennsylvania.

Rem did you get you hog at a hunting refuge where you pay to play or on private or public land?

Turned out to be one of those "canned hunts" (?) where we pay to play. I think they just released a few on the other side of the hill from us and they wandered down an ATV trail and got shot. Like it was almost too easy to be real. I was kind of disappointed because I always said that style of hunting isn't real hunting. The place is fenced, but it's pretty big; they said it's about 800 acres. My buddy shot a large boar there 6 or 8 years ago and wanted to go back so it was easy to talk me into it because I'd never done that before and always wanted to shoot one. Even though it was canned I must admit it was fun and I had a good time. I'd like to do more hog hunting but not like that. They butcher all game on premise and vacuum pack the meat and it's good. You can use any rifle from .223 on up. I used the Savage Mod. 10 in my avatar minus the bipod. It's in 300 WSM using my favorite handload with 150 gr. Accubonds. Think I was using too much gun? My buddy used his 340 Weatherby ! I reload 340 for him and it was a Barnes 210 gr. TTSX over 87 gr. of RL-19; he could go elk hunting with that ! Third guy in our party works with my buddy and used his 30-30 with Hornady FTX ( flex tip expanding) bullets. 165 gr. (?). All were one shot kills at less than 100 yds. We had fun making "use enough gun" jokes and saying that 340 will probably destroy half the hog when he shoots it. Another buddy of mine has been living in S. Carolina the last couple years and has a line on some hog hunting down there and has already done some. I'm retired so I may look into that in the future.
