And it got shot by a skinny 140lb hairless ape.

Just kidding, you have a point. Pigs are said to be among the smartest mammals. That thing is scary looking.

<<Imagine how smart this pig to get to this size without being shot.>>

You have to give the poster credit.
As you see no weapon was involved, other than his hands. Hand to hand combat, he had to tear his heart out.
I think it’s a dam good job. I don't think Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan could do it.

Maybe it was pen-fed for years then let go to be shot 5 minutes later?

Most likely not, those tusks and hair typically don't develop in pens. Plus the shield looks to be fairly well developed.

I assume that's in Texas I've read there is a real problem with them in parts of the state.
wonder the weight of this one?
from experience I know that one that has access to agri-crops is going to be great eating. a buddy took one that had been raiding soybean field and apple orchard the fat was 3" thick - that was mighty tasty. I took one in the Natl Forest that had been in the mast where lots of persimmons were around it was tasty.
they are eaters of oppurtunity however so carrion could be a meal to them.

He looks around 250 to 300 pounds. Dime a dozen in Texas, but still a very nice hog.

What did you shoot him with?

Mr. koja48,

As far as getting hogs in WA state goes, be careful what you wish for, you might just get it :). Once you get them, you will have them pretty much forever.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I'd venture to guess that that pig weighs in the region of 300 to 400 lbs. It is a nice looking hog.

Wild pig weight will fool most folks! The hair is thick and the body is alittle different that a domestic hog. I have got pigs that folks guessed to be 300 and they would weight out at 225. So it is best to use a scale.

Were u at in Texas? I might hunt with you someday. PM sent to you.

I thought wild pigs faces were very flat and farm pigs werent.

Depends on how much Euro they've been mixed with as to shape, color ETC. The dead give away on Euro genes are small round years and a long straight tail. Farm pigs tend to have large floppy ears.

Euro hogs also have a big chest, small hips and skinny hind quarters and a "razor" on their backs. Of course depending on what is in the area will depend on how Euro and or farm pig looking the local wild pigs will be.

If you compare a farm pig to a pure wild Euro hog a farm pig of the same frame size will be much heavier because they are breed to have massive hams and much thicker muscling in general. A pure wild hog is built for speed not Lbs of recovered product like a farm pig.

A farm hog that goes feral will start producing wilder looking hogs within several generations. That hog in the picture looks to me like he is several generations out from a farm pig but definitely not a pure wild Euro like most feral hogs shot in the USA.

Leon,

I hear you. If it happened, I reckon I'd have to make it my bound duty to thin the rascals out. Maybe . . . heck out here landowners expect the state to do something about elk depredation, yet the same landowners steadfastly refuse to open their land to access or even participate in the state-sponsored "register to hunt" or master hunter programs. Before I'm too feeble, I would like to go on a pig hunt, though.

I will take Elk for hogs any day of the week. Elk don't have a litter of six or eight, and then six months later each of those six or eight have a litter. Elk will not root up a 50 acre pasture and make it look like the surface of the moon overnight. I know Elk can be destructive (many farmers in the Texas panhandle area have problems with renegade Elk) but in my experience they are not even in the same hemisphere as hogs.

Also, in Texas, Elk (as of right now) are like hogs in that they are not considered a game animal, and can be hunted year round :).

Mr. Nathan, did you ever weigh the hog and will you tell us what you shot it with?

Thanks,
LeonCarr

The Duroc pig which is in the third picture is the only pig that has the floppy ears in the domestic swine breed. Your wild or feral hogs are mainly part wild and part domestic, you can look at the tail if it is straight it is most likely of the so called wild boar stain. But over the years this has been bred out of the population of wild or feral hogs. Alsothe hair is straight and long legs are longer on the rear than the front. There is a breed of spanish hogs that favor the feral hog, the spanish brought these over and put them on some island of off the east coast.
As far as using the right caliber to kill one with I have killed them trying to get them out of a trap. Did this by grabbing the rear legs and the stress out and die. I have also knocked in the head with a hammer.
I don't think caliber has much to do with it either because I have shot them with a 45-70 more than once and they kept going but yet I have shot them with a 22LR and dropped them dead.
