Hey all - looking to find some public / state / BLM lands in Amarillo area that are known for gobblers or wild pigs?

I live in Raton, New Mexico - just a skip and a jump away from Amarillo, last several times I went to Amarillo I was unable to scout out anything at all...

I mention Hog and Turkey cause those are really the only animals within my limited budget I can hunt on "non resident" prices most anywhere... Until our fire department gets a new union contract sadly, I can't do many pricey hunts.

Until then, over the counter New Mexico Turkey, bear, small game, prairie dog and some upland birds... and Colorado pheasant are the only things in my price range.

I would appreciate any leads yall would have - :banghead:

I was born in Muleshoe and grew up in Amarillo... I remember hunting land being pretty scarce. Every turkey I've ever seen near Amarillo was in or near Palo Duro canyon. I didn't hunt turkey back then, so I didn't pursue it. But if I were there now, I'd try to find some available land adjacent the canyon. I don't remember of hearing about hog in the area, it just seemed to dry for them to move in... maybe towards Lake Meredith or Lake Mackenzie you'd have some luck. The fishing was good at Meredith. ... if it was prairie dogs you were after, I'd have you covered. :D

FWIW, most of my hunting buddies from back home head south and east for decent hunting. Good luck!

Well let me say - Prairie dogs are my newest obssession & I would love to get leads on some dog towns in Amarillo area, and I will research Lake Meredith this week.

Message me or reply here - If you ever come to Raton NM area, drop me a line I have one fairly large prairie dog area... Im not able to access it currently, some local Antelope guides have asked that I take pressue off the area for now, as they have hunting leases and need to get successful hunts in.

"Lets drive down the road, glass Pronghorns, get out and shoot. Thanks for $4,000 + to shoot a prairie goat."

I sure love pronghorn, and have no problem with guides - but good god, $4,000 to shoot pronghorn on a road hunt... Not for me....

PM'ed, FMF.

Can you get close enough to them "dogs" to take 'em with a 45acp?

I've never been able to get close enough to get a reliable shot, but I'm no bullseye shooter. An AR or a bolt-gun however...
