hogdon hp-38 and 357

I'm confused, I have been loading 38 spl with hp-38 and tonite i've been looking into 357 using that powder.

I'm using 158 lswc and hogdons website lists 5gr as a max charge but on my container of powder it says 7grains? And I always assumed the loads posted on the powder container were starting loads?

What do ya'll consider the max charge with this powder and bullet?

The loads posted on powder canisters are the MAX loads, not the starting loads. Reduce the posted charge weights by 10% for most powders to find the starting charge weights. On the Hodgdon site they list a Max charge of only 5.0gr under a 158gr LSWC probably to be sure you don't get leading in your barrel. It's not because the pressures are too high since the list pressures of only 23,900 CUP.

The reason the load data on the bottle lists a charge of 7.0gr as the Max is the bullet. They are loading a 150gr Nosler jacketed bullet, not a lead bullet. That is why the data is different. It is common for the charge weights for a jacketed bullet to be higher than with a lead bullet. Data for lead bullets and jacketed bullets IS NOT INTERCHANGEABLE!

HP-38/W231 is a fast pistol powder that will work in .357 Magnum cartridges but you won't achieve the optimum performance.

Any time there is only one load listed, it is the MAX load, and you are expected to reduce it 10% for the starting load.

You will see it often on Hodgdon data concerning Winchester powders.
And always on Alliant data as far as I can remember.

What they list is the MAX load, not the starting load.

HP-38 & WW-231 is the same powder ,a fast powder that will give a lead boolit a fast kik into the lands of the barrel & will skid a bit before starting to grab the rifling & that will start gas cutting of the boolit .

Better results are obtained by slower powders , "mid range" powders to name a few are universal , HS-6 for just a couple that`ll give better results with lead .

Better to give it a slow shove than a qwik jerk to the lands.

Also fast powders spik in pressure very qwik when maxis reached & with fast powders compare it to burning 87 octane to buning nitro in ya car .NOT good!
