lately when im out hunting birds ive seen, bear now and then,:what: i wounder, is there a good thing to have this hollow point slugs whit me just in case, or is that kind of ammunition useless against bear anyway ?, if not , what type of hollow point slugs do u guys recommend ?

I know little of the ammunition question. I would speculate that a slug, especially a 12=gauge, doesn't really need to expand, and it might sacrifice penetration (the slug's real forte) to do so. A more practical concern is how you will be able to switch from your hunting birdshot to the slugs if you suddenly encounter that bear. This would only be remotely possible with a detachable box magazine.

Most slugs are dead soft lead, and expand to almost 1.5" anyway. Anything more than a very tiny hollowpoint would probably make the thing blow up.

Brenneke slugs are better against bear anyway. I'd go with the 3" magnum Black Magics.

Doesn't Sweden have some really big bears? 3" mag Brenneke Black Magic is definitely my recommendation.

where I live it is illegal to carry ammunition not intended for the game you are hunting. eg, no slugs during duck season, no birdshot during deer

+1

Higher sectional density than Foster slugs + nasty meplat = dead stuff
But I'm not a hunter so I may be full of it. :D

detachable box magazine shotgun is the only way to do this, and i would not bring this thread up if i didnt own one ! :p ehm as you say the hollow point seems more useless in this case ! im gonna check up on this brenekke Amunition, seems good ! :p, and yeah the bears in swe are really big but i think your Grizzly bears are a lot more aggresive ! :p thnks guys for the help ! :p

I'd be wary of shooting a bear that isn't in the process of attacking you.

I don't know how it is there, but here you better be in season, and have the proper license & permits. Or else have teeth marks on you when the fish & game officers get there to investigate.

The soft Foster type slugs are very effective for HD use.

yeah i know this and i would never shot at a bear just walking by, but if a bear attacks me ?? better to have the ammo and dont use it than dont have the ammo in need ;D , I dont think that in the situation when a man gets attacked by a bear, you dont really care whats right and wrong, am i right rcmodel ?

Do you own or have you ever used a pump action shotgun? It's certainly VERY easy to slip a slug in. I'm sure the OP isn't worried about dropping a shotshell or two on the ground if he needs to defend himself from bear, and at worst you lose 2 rounds of birdshot. Double barrel shotguns are even easier to swap bird for slug.

Why the need for a detachable box magazine? It's no easier than with a pump gun, and only marginally easier than a tube fed semi-auto.

bear a bit/lot tougher then a hog, well" got invited to bust a few nuisance hogs again soon,if my old tired body will cooperate, anyway my old western field wears a new 18.5 barrell,my old speer lawmen slugs are reduce recoil hollowpoints" at 1300 fps ,or i have remington slugger solids at 1560 fps,or remington #0 buckshot 12 .32 caliber pellets."go the slug route..

Well I got the idea to shoot a slug into some gelatin today just to see what happens. The slug used was a 1oz Winchester Super X Foster type 2/34". I shot into the calibrated 6x15" block of gelatin from about 4 feet away.

The result was that the gelatin block was blown to shreds. the cutting block it was sitting on was snapped in half, and the arm of the propane grill both were sitting on was bent and broken.

After annihilating and fully penetrating the jello, the slug bounced off the box of dirt that was behind the gelatin and was recovered in the shape of a flat donut, shown here.

So, id say that foster style hollowpoint slugs are ideal for defensive use against humans or other similarly sized animals, but may flatten out and fail to expand adequately for use on a large bear.
