I'm looking at loading some .30-30 ammo. I have some Rainier 180gr expanding hollow points designed for .300 Blackout sitting around (pictured below). Are these safe to load in a tubular magazine? Thought I would ask here before wasting my time. Screenshot_20190304-131122_Samsung Internet.jpg

They make hollow point ammo so the hollow point thing is not an issue. What you need to worry about is the lack of a cannalure on that bullet. A very firm roll crimp is necessary to assure that the bullet does not slide back into the brass and raise the pressure when fired. The problem with standard pointy bullets is that is where the center of the primer anvil is and recoil *might* set off a chainfire.
I own a Lee FCD and am dubious if that crimp in a bullet w/o a cannalure would stay put.

I have a FCD and I intend to check the cartridges for function. A friend of mine had about 600 .30-30 cases squirrelled away, so we are looking for economical ways to put them to use.

Even though I would prefer a bullet with a crimp groove the Lee Factory Crimp Die will create its own groove when applied. It's worth a try it you really want to.

Just a note, he sure that bullet will reliably expand at the lower velocities normally associated with the 30-30 or they are useless.

If the rim of the hollow is larger than the o.d. of the primer, AND, if your magazine is a fairly snug fit on the ammo, it should be all right. The center of the anvil is in the center of the primer cup so it should take a pretty direct hit to set it off. I''ve used some commercial hollow point 125 grain stuff in my 94 and 336, but most often only load one in the chamber and one in the mag. The few times I've loaded more than two I had no problems.

These will likely be for target use, so the expansion won't matter. From what I have seen and heard about this particular bullet already, expansion is around .4 with one person reporting .5 inches (which I doubt).

This is key, and worth repeating - the meplat really should be wider than the primer pocket and the mag tube not allow round movement that would let the sharp edge of the meplat to dink the primer in places that don't need to be struck.
