i just saw an ad for a holographic sight.
i had no clue it even existed.

it looked cool, but HUGE. guess it's not meant for CCW?

What's the advantage of a holographic sight over a laser in a defense situation?

You can mount a low profile HWS on a pistol. You just have to find the right holster for it.

As far as laser versus HWS, it's a matter of personal preference. How about both? (insert overkill smiley here).

Here's my carry gun - an XDm 3.8 9mm - with a JPoint.
I've been carrying daily since 1988 and I like this setup a LOT!

Japle sweet looking set up. Did the extra weight affect ejecting / feeding?
Since you've had it on there this long, the internals must be pretty stout, not to shake loose.

There are advantages to both. With the laser you generally still have your irons for back up. You don't have to bring the gun up to your eyes so you can shoot from the hip, under a table or behind cover with your head somewhere else. But they are not real useful in daylight. With the red dot you have a really easy to use, really easy to see sight. But they are still pretty large for CCW.

With a carbine its an easy choice for the red dot. With a pistol I'm thinking a laser is better, at least for now.

perhaps you should clarify? I didn't know the XDm was in production since 1988....
I didn’t say I carried the XDm since 1988, I said I’ve been carrying since 1988. I went through 1911s, BHPs, Witnesses, Glocks and various wheelguns.

Greg528iT, the ½ oz weight isn’t noticeable. The slight increase in size isn’t noticeable. There's no change in function at all. The sight’s rated for 5,000 g.

I first installed a JPoint on my CZ75 SA for steel shooting. After a year and a half, thousands of rounds and one battery change, it’s working perfectly. When I changed the battery (they’re good for 6-12 months), the POI moved about 2” to the right. Two minutes and 5 rounds and I was shooting dead on again.

I've had the JPoint on my XDm for a few months. IMHO, this type of sight is the future of handgunning.

As far as whether a laser or dot sight is better, I’ve seen hundreds of red dots on USPSA and Steel Challenge guns, but never a laser. Does anyone use a laser in competition?

wait.. you didnt need to recalibrate the holo sight to true after thousands of rounds?!

i have a cheap $20 laser on my .22 and after a brick (500rounds) i need to recalibrate.

How the heck does that thing stay accurate when it'll move so much more since it's on the slide?

JPoint

JPoints....I have one on the slide of my 1911. It has been there for the last eight years..about 24000 rounds through the gun in that time, maybe more. No recalibration.
They are well made little suckers.

It doesn't move on the slide. It moves with the slide. Just like iron sights.

The JPoint is held on the mount with two small screws. I just used a little blue LocTite. The screws stay tight, the mount stays tight, the sight is rated for 5,000 g.
The things have a reputation for durability. I'm not worried about it.
