Hello all,

As of yesterday afternoon I am the owner of a nice used Smith & Wesson model 640 no dash. This gun is a .38 special chambered gun and is just what I needed.

I plan to get a pocket holster since I do not feel that the 21 oz. weight is too much for that method of carry. However, it turns out that I have gotten a little fatter since I last carried IWB or maybe the shape of the revolver vs. my old GLOCK is different enough to carry less comfortably. Any ideas for some sort of OWB holster that will conceal enough to use when wearing an untucked shirt? I was thinking that it should ride fairly high. I am not that wealthy and was hoping to find something in the $30-40 range. Also, any ideas for a good, inexpensive pocket holster?

Thank you.

Here is my 642 in my Mika. Excellent pocket holster, as are others. I also have an Uncle Mike's, but the gun prints a bit more in the Mikey than the Mika.

Of course, my 642 is lighter than a 640.

If you're looking for relatively deep concealment with just a t-shirt, I would highly recommend giving Barami Hip Grips a try. They are cheap to try out. I know it's not an OWB holster, but J-frames (and for the most part K-frames too) just disappear. It may be less uncomfortable since there isn't 2 layers of leather to deal with. Just a thought...

I purchased a Hume outside the belt lefthanded leather holster. I wear it right handed inside my belt and it works perfect if you have a loose overshirt or coat on. $15.00 at a show.

After looking around a little, I ordered a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster. I also looked at the Uncle Mike's Kydex holsters. Any input on either the paddle or belt versions of these? The price was right but I figured I'd get what I pay for.

I have one of these .38 spl 640s and I love the thing. It is exactly the same size as my 642 which I carry very often in a Hedley pocket holster. Makes a range shooter since I can't stand to shoot my 642 extensively. I'm very satisfied with my Hedley and recommend it without reservation.

Edited to add: Hey, I was just looking over his website which I haven't done in a long time and I don't see the J-frame holster listed anymore. Could be he's not making it, but I would e-mail him to be sure.

Another addition: Kramer is liquidating their cowhide pocket holsters for the J-frame on ebay. I bought one from him last week. Cost: $32. Couldn't pass this deal up. Always nice to have a reserve.
