As I've been working on the mountain land and wearing my USP9 open carry (don't have my non-resident permit yet), I've found that my cheap Uncle Mike's set up is not cutting the mustard, as they say.

I've got an Uncle Mike's holster with the thimb break.....the one that will convert to IWB/OWB/belt clip on/ or belt slide through. But that isn't too bad.

I figure I really need to upgrade my belt. I have the black canvas belt with the big plastic clip together buckle. It won't fit through the belt loops on my work pants and causes much consternation while trying to keep things secure while working around the cabin. It used to be adequate for the casual carry around while walking, etc......but just isn't working now.

What belt, thin enough to go through beltloops, do you like? What's the thinnest that works practically for keeping the holster under control?

Us MD'ers don't get much experience with holsters........

Any 1.5" "rigger" or "instructor" belt will work. Thin enough to fit throught the loops and strong enough to not flex. I like the CQB and UM belts. Wilderness are nice too, but they're about twice the price for the same belt.

Uncle Mike's makes a nice looking belt, reinforced with polymer between two layers of synthetic leather.

They last well, and work very well, for about $40.

I actually like it better than my fancy expensive double-thick custom stiffened belts.

Morgan,

Thanks for the heads up. Is that the rigger's belt? I was looking at that one today in the Modway catalog.......

Nope, it's more of a general looking belt.

The only photo they've got up is pretty small:

It looks just like a normal belt, but works very well for carry, and I carry a full size USP45 and two spare magazines.

If leather - quality. As for nylon, I have no idea.

you get what you pay for. If you buy a $13.00 leather belt, it will fall apart like one too.

If you have a police officer uniform shop anywhere close you can usually get a fairly decent leather belt in 1 1/2 to 2 inch width for about $20.

I picked up one at a shop in Denver and it is holding up very well, really stabilizes the holsters too, but I use a galco high ride type for carry.

I'll check out the place over by DC that caters to polic officers, they have a lot of holster gear.

Coltdriver....those Galco holsters sure do like nice....I may have to try one of those for the USP.

Be careful with rigger belts, many are 1.75" for BDU size belt loops. You may not be able to fit them through some pants. Be sure to get 1.5" or 1 5/8" MAX. 1.5" is pretty standard with holster makers and would be my pick.

You have lots of options in the $30-45 range.

Here are some sturdy, well made gun belts belt that I have personally had good luck with carrying a holster and gun while working:

http://www.thebeltman.net/ (VERY well made)

http://www.raftersgunleather.com/ (EXTRA thick...exotic options)

http://www.tedblocker.com/ (Handmade craftsmanship at reasonable
prices)

http://www.galls.com/style.html?assort=general_catalog&style=LP224&cat=204 (Budget pick)

Hope this helps...MANY other good options available that others will also recommend. Incidentally...1.5" is a good standard width that should fit through most belt loops...if the pants you wear have "dress style" belt loops you will need to drop down to a 1 1/4" width belt.

-Regards

Milt Sparks makes a very high quality leather belt that will last you for many years to come.

Another poster mentioned the Rafter S belt. In my opinion, this is one of the best deals out there. These belts are high quality and you can get a cowhide belt for under $50.
