Hey,

I just picked up a S&W Model 65 with a 3 inch barrel. It is a pretty sweet little lady, but I am finding that not many holsters are made for the odd 3 inch barrel length. When I have found one it is very expensive. I would prefer to have a holster that is LESS than $100.
I am just looking for a strong side, leather top snap holster to carry in the field. It doesn't have to be fancy or ultra concealable. Just something to take fishing and into the woods and occasionally used as a CCW piece.
If you have any ideas, please post them. I know I can't be the only one who needs a holster for a 3 inch S&W.
Thanks

Nala

I need one too, though it'll probably be a while before I have the funds for it.

My 65 does fit pretty well into a police Glock 23 holster, though. :) It has a retention strap that takes care of the less than perfect fit, and since I'm only using it out at the hunting cabin for now, it's working fine...

I'd really like something like the inexpensive Uncle Mike's Kydex holster for my 3".

Not sure of the nomenclature, but there is a US military pattern flap holster that was made for the basic M&P framed guns from WWII up through the present time. Originals, used and new, show up from time to time and some outfit advertises repros for about $39 (?) in SGN and GL.

They feature a belt slot for up to 1 3/4" belts plus wire hanger for the GI web belt. Almost all were made for the 4" barrel but there is no reason why it could not be cut for a 3" barrel. They make an outstanding field holster, are very comfortable to wear, and actually conceal fairly well on the belt under a jacket.

I have several of them to go with Ruger Sec 6s, K frames, etc.

I use Model 19 2 1/2" holsters for mine. The barrel might stick out a bit but no big deal. Any holster maker has them.

Galco makes their "Speed Master" pancake-style holster for the 2.5"/3" K-frame. My three-inch K's fit it with maybe an eighth of an inch of muzzle peeking out the bottom.

Bianchi model #111 Cyclone leather thumbreak is made for 3" K frames and it can be worn strong side or cross draw. They also make one in Accumold nylon with thumb break strong side only....I have one of each.

I use the Desantis from www.rfholsters.com

There is no need to compromise. Get one that is made specifically for a 3" barrel, and your muzzle will be protected from nicks and bumps on the crown.

Definitely the Desantis from rfholsters.com. My 66 F-comp fits nice and snug, and the thumb break is quick and easy.

Be glad to build you something. Take a look at my web site. I build mostly leather for Cowboy Action Shooting, but also build holsters and belts for any other firearm as well. You can have a holster that is custom made to fit your revolver exactly ... one that is wet molded that your revolver will click into place in. Price...$55.00 plus $6 shipping to U.S. address.

I see a lot of suggestions for 2 1/2" holsters and letting a bit of the barrel poke out. That seems like one idea- if you are worried about the crown getting messed up get an IWB, I think your pants will protect it (though it may be a bit less comfortable).

Still, I wonder why no one is suggesting any 4" holsters. It seems to me that the cheaper closed holsters may use the barrel to help hold the gun, but the better ones and the open ones should work fine. I've never tried it though so I don't have any specific suggestions. However, when I do get a carry holster for my 65LS, if I can't find one specifically for a 3" in the price range I'm looking for that is my likely route (a 4" open holster) until I spring for one of the more expensive custom holsters for a 3".

Ahh, a fellow Okie!

I'm from God's Country too. Temporarily stuck in YankeeLand.:(

I have a #88 "Street Combat" Holster for a 4 inch S&W Model 19 that I bought in 1990. It's recieved a fair amount of use and is still in excellent condition.

I have a #88 "Street Combat" Holster for a 2 inch J-frame S&W that I bought in 1991. It has been used almost dailey since it was new and is beginning to show some wear. I'll probably replace it in a year or two.

I have a #88 "Street Combat" Holster for a 2.5 inch K-Frame S&W that I bought in 1998. It's recieved heavy use but is still going strong.

I have a #88 "Street Combat" Holster for a Taurus Model 85 that I purchased in 2001. It's on my belt when the hard-used J-Frame holster that I bought in '91 isn't. It's still new.

There stitching has held up fine for me. This is the most comfortable and concealable holster for a small revolver that I've ever tried, and I have a dresser drawer full of them.

I have a Alessi Talon Plus clip-on IWB that I use with a M-13 3". I really like the holster and reccomend it highly.

Did you get that nice Alessi from a store or a Website (and if so, what's the site name/URL)?

I just ordered a Fist pancake holster for my SP101 from www.gunnersalley.com
They make the holster to your specifications, including leather color and barrel length.
It was $54.95 plus 6 bucks shipping.
I never had a Fist holster before, but they are pretty well spoken of on this forum.
