Ok, I have my new gun on order (STI Trojan 9mm). Now I need a holster or holsters.

Seems the guys at the club all have these Ghost holster rigs for the steel matches. They appear to really help with quick unholstering. But, they are not IDPA legal.

I'm thinking of getting an IDPA legal holster first and then maybe thinking about the Ghost holster later. I know it will handicap me some for steel. But, I can't use it for IDPA.

What do you guys recommend?

Different games, different holsters. Do you think a ghost holster will be the difference in first or second place? If you're that close to winning, buy one, and use a cheap Fobus for IDPA. You can't really buy speed when shooting from concealment with an IDPA approved holster.

The matches at our club are mostly for fun. I'm nowhere near the top right now. So, i think I'll stick with an OWB holster for range and competition until I get my overall times down with better speed and accuracy.

Get a cheap (not quite fobus cheap) Kydex belt holster and go shooting.

I dont like the Ghost as it gives the muzzle no support. I much prefer the CR Speed. If you have to draw from a funky position, the trigger guard can bind in a Ghost.

Hoser,

Would you recommend the Bladetech SRB, Comp-tac Paddle or Comp-tac Belt holsters? Or something else?

I'm not ready to spend $200 on a speed holster like the Ghost or CR Speed.

The Ghost won’t let you cross over to IDPA (there are several clubs in north Texas) and I don’t think it would be a good holster to begin playing gun games with (assuming your just starting out). The Ghost also costs more and must use a $pecial belt (it’s bolted to the belt) paddle style holsters do not require this.

Comp-Tac makes good stuff. Its up to you if you want a paddle or a belt holster. I dont have much meat on me so I dont care for paddle holsters as they poke me.

I shoot a lot of steel and I use a Ghost Holster. Previously I used a CR Speed but I don't like the lock on it. It seems to want to lock itself sometimes if I'm not careful then I almost pull my pants off when trying to draw. The Ghost has the best lock.

As far as Kydex holsters they are pretty much comparable. The only one I do not like is the fobus. It's not even kydex it's nylon or something. The thing is that it retains the gun too tight. It will really slow down your draw. Other holsters such as the bladetech have adjustable tension screws. So you can get "the right" tension needed.

I like the belt hosters over the paddle holsters. Less shift. I like the bladetech techlock attachements. Real easy to get the holster on and off. I use a bladetech for 3 gun.

I would suggest that you just get an IDPA holster, and if you are losing the steel matches by LESS than .1 second, go to a CR speed, Ghost, Ribas, Safariland, ect...

It depends on the steel match, the Steel Challenge runs divisions that are the same as USPSA, and IDPA divisions, so you can compete with your IDPA gear and remain competitive.

I like Blade-tech holsters, I have them for most of my guns.

Not sure if the holsters for the STI 9mm is any different from a normal 1911, but both the CZ Custom Shop, and Top Gun Supply have a small supply of Blade-tech holsters in stock.
