Hi, I recently purchased a hk usp compact .40 , I need to get two holsters.. one for range duty and an I.w.b for conceal carry, I have been looking, but there are so many choices/options ....I'm hoping for some first hand knowledge, Thanks in advance.

I've never looked at mine for serious carry but I have a Fobus that was about $20. that carries the gun well, beyond that I'd look at the Blackhawk line of leather holsters. I have a number of them and they are well made and reasonably priced, made in Italy like the fancy shoes.

Safariland TS7 .....

Id check www.Safariland.com . I think the new TS7 line fits a few HK USP Compact .40 pistols. The TS7 holsters have a lot to offer. Safariland redesigned the lining so there is less surface contact points(less wear/marking). :D
The holsters are easy to clean & secure too. Prices may vary and the new holsters may or may not fit the USP compact .40 but I recall one or two having it on the gun chart.
Other brands/styles to consider include: Blackhawk SERPA CQC or the "sportster" version. I own a Sportster left hand M&P Shield holster. It was $16.00 & can be worn different ways(strong, FBI cant, crossdraw). The regular Blackhawk CQC SERPA has a added safety lever. I owned a regular M&P SERPA too & had no problems with it but many cadre/gunners dislike the format. They claim SERPAs are unsafe, but I say it's more of a training/operator error issue.

The leather rigs from shops like Wright Leather Works, High Noon Holsters, R Grizle, Savoy Leather, Galco, Kirkpatrick Leather, Ted Blocker, Greg Kramer, Milt Sparks, Alessi, Mernickle are all worth checking.
Contact the shop first too to make sure you are clear on prices, styles, features. Many holster shops are back-log or way behind due to customer requests.
Kydex holsters are now very popular. I've seen a few good brands worth looking at; G Code, Black Rhino Concealment, T Rex Arms, Armadillo Concealment, Hodges Custom Kydex.
Some Kydex holsters are produced better than others. Like gunsmiths or Cerakote surface coating shops; look for the holster makers with good reviews & lifetime product warranty offers.
I'm thinking about buying a new Kydex Black Rhino Concealment rig for my Glock 21 .45acp gen 04 then using the "free" trigger guard holster(safety orange color) for my sub compact M&P Shield 9mm no thumb safety. :D

I personally think many Kydex holsters are over-priced for what they are but they are all the rage. Many shooters & CCW holders claim Kydex is vastly better than tradional cow leather holsters too.

I hope you don't mind if I cut and a paste a response; someone asked the exact same question a week ago but for another gun (the Beretta Nano). To me the answer is the same: The Garrett Industries IWB and Garrett STX 2.0 holsters. I have the same the USPc9/40.

I highly recommend the IWB from Garrett Industries. I have seven of them for various guns. The shell is kydex but there's a leather lining bonded to the inside. You can get a wide array of clips and belt loops for the holster and easily swap them in a few minutes. Retention and cant are independently adjustable, too. They're available in black and OD green and the liner can be had in natural or black. The four pictures below are all IWBs for different guns (Ruger LCR, Beretta Nano and HK P30S). All the different clips and loops work well and lock the holster in to the belt. There's minimal material beyond what's needed to cover the gun so they don't get hot and sweaty. The kydex shell is very rigid and won't collapse when you draw no matter how hard you cinch your belt down while the leather lining protects the finish and eliminates the annoying "clicking" sound (hence the name "Silent Thunder").

Perhaps there's no such thing as a "perfect" holster but the Garrett Industries Silent Thunder rigs are the closest I've ever found.

In this last pic the holster on the left is an STX 2.0 for the full sized HK USP.
