Some holster makers incorporate heavy molding in their holsters to insure better retention. I have been looking at holsters from Rafter Leather and while they look good, they dont't show any heavy molding. My question is do any of you members have any experience with their product and if so how does it compare with a heavy molded holster?
Thanks!

Have a couple Rafter S holsters

As far as Im concerned, the molding is there for looks. The Rafter S holster hold my guns very well. THe real test is if you can hold the holster upside down and shake it and the gun will not release. The Rafter S holsters I use perform this perfectly well. I have one for a HK P7 and a Glock 19 and have one coming for a browning HP.

They are one of the best deals on holsters on the net. Buy with confidence. Oh, also, they seem to be the nicest people I have ever met. The best deal they have is the Shark Line. I have a belt, IWB holster and mag pouch, in black Shark and I love it!

The only thing negative I ever heard is a freind bought a leather holster for a revolver and he said the leather was too thick, but the holster is fantastic.

Detailed molding can be an aid to retention, especially in something stiff like horsehide. How much it helps is up for debate. As dravur said, it also makes 'em look pretty.

That being said, I have a RafterS OWB sharkskin belt holser myself and it works just fine. RafterS makes a quality product and is a great value. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them.

The holsters certainly look nice and they are very reasonable I'm just use to seeing detailed molding on most holsters and got to wondering. Since you both own one and approve of it I now have some first hand advice. Many thanks,

I believe the process to which you refer is called boning. I don't know that it has any appreciable function, however it would be a good indication of attention to detail and workmanship. Besides it sure does look nice.
