I'm a poor college student with a thing for firearms. I bought 2 handguns this past month and am getting sick of tired of California forcing me to buy useless locks for them. I've been looking at the Homak gun cabinets (not safes) and want to get either the 6, 7, or 8 gun model.

My question: does owning one of these cabinets exempt me from having to buy a lock for each gun I buy?

Ok, I think I just answered my own question.

I've been poking around on the CA DOJ page, and it seems that Homak cabinets do not qualify as a safe, but only as a "lock box."

In order to be exempt from buying a new lock, I have to sign an affidavit and present a receipt for the lock box. Another question: can I make copies of the receipt and present them to the FFL on taking delivery of the gun? Is the lock box exemption only valid for 30 days after I purchase it? Or can I use copies of the receipt for making gun purchases in the future?

I'm guessing with a safe you wouldn't have these issues? If you are only buying handguns, you can get small handgun safes for pretty good prices.

Kevlarman,

How about one of those small, handgun-sized Sentry steel safes? (Not the fire safe, but the security safe.) I saw one a Wal-Mart a while back and it wasn't all that much money (less than $50?). Looked MUCH more substantial than the sheet-metal gun boxes I've seen. It could probably hold a few handguns.

Well, I have 2 rifles and a shotgun also, so I was looking for something to store both longguns and handguns.

Any place I can get the Homak cabinets for cheap?

Although a safe will be on my "need to purchase" list in the future, I simply do not have the funds right now. I also live in an apartment with two other roommates. The cabinet will not keep any determined thief out, but it keeps curious hands away.

Wal-Mart has them but sometimes they are stocked as a seasonal item. Around here you only see them in the fall when hunting season starts.
They might still be able to order one though.

I got one 15 years ago and its fine for the $80 I paid, sometimes I really close and lock it. Still looking for 3-4 old school lockers, they would supply the same security at a bargain basement price. How this helps you I have no idea.:D

Try K-Mart or Sportsmart. They have a verison for long guns and small arms. A few of my friends have this lock box.
