Home invasions and gun safes

Before I bought a gun safe (and with the thickness of the steel and fire rating I feel comfortable with the term "safe"), I stored my guns in a locked windowless room with all the firing pins removed. I know they would have probably been stolen had thieves broken in and broken down the door to that room, but the next person who tried to use one for criminal purposes would have been unpleasantly surprised.

No, and not in my home.

I have three safes, excuse me RSC's. They are inexpensive Canon 24 gun models, weigh around 400 pounds empty, I think a 30 min. 1200 f fire rating, and are bolted to the frame of the house (2) or the slab (1). They won't stop real pro's, but then almost nothing will. I also have a monitored security system and wireless cameras and separate alarm for the room with the safes.

My insurance company thinks they are just fine and gave a discount for having valuables in a "safe", as well as a monitored alarm discount. I think these types are just about perfect, I got the last one on Black Friday this year on sale for $499 (regularly $799). They are light enough that me and a friend could move it into place, but tough enough that grab and go thieves won't be doing much grabbing.

In my experience most of the people bashing these as "RSC's", tin cans, etc. want to sell you a $5,000 real safe. If you have enough "stuff" that professionals are targeting your house you can probably afford to drop $5-20k on a real safe, but for the rest of us these seem fine.

Yep, that's my view as well. A lot of my defense planning is based on making my house (and stuff) harder to break into than my neighbors.

I'm more inclined to get one of the less expensive ($1000-$2000) gun safes, or RCS's or what ever the hell we are calling them now, for my every day fun guns. Anything I absolutely will not tolerate losing is going to go into a safety deposit recepticale (Hmmmm...... an SDR?) at a bank. Obviously it has to be big enough to accomodate the items, and the bank must be willing to accept unloaded firearms. I don't have anything that valuable....... yet.

Never have had to draw a gun on anyone yet. I did grab my .357 once and go outside to check a noise. I kept hearing something hitting the side of the house I was renting. I went outside and it was a white tail buck chewing on the longer grass at the edge of the house I hadn't trimmed yet. His antlers kept hitting the house.
