Surfing the web last week i came across directions to make a homemade version of the outers foul out system. I put one together this weekend and used it on my Mosin Nagant 91/30. the bore was dark before I started. I used CLP, Hoppes No9, and Shooters Choice trying to clean the bore. I figured for the price, I'd try the electric method.

I picked up a piece of 3/16" diameter steel rod from Lowes as well as the smalles rubber corks they had. I bored one cork with a drill bit and forced the steel rod on the rubber cork. I put the rod in the barrel from the breech end and a small oring on the other end. I think it was a #7 o ring. It fit over the rod and barely into the muzzle end. I mixed an electroyte solution of 2 parts water, one part white vinegar and one part household ammonia cleaner. I used a small squirt bottle to fill the bore up and slid the top o ring down to center the steel rod in the bore. I used a continuity tester flashlight to provide the electricity. I connected the red wire to the front sight and the black wire to the steel rod. After 20 minutes, I disconnected the battery and dumped the now sludge out of the barrel I repeated the process one more time. I then bronze brushed out the barrel and swabbed the bejeezus out of it with normal solvents again.

The outcome? A shinier bore! I will try to get to the range this week to see if it had an effect on the accuracy.

I can't say if this is good or bad for your firearm, so if you do what I did, after reading this on the internet, you do so at your own risk!

I made one, years ago for my MN rifles.used it on a 91/30,did a great job, nice mirror looking bore, groups went to pot, opened up 6in. had to run 20 fouling shots thru the rifle to get the groups back down.still use it now and than,on really nasty bores, but don't try for the "mirror brite" any more. jwr

Ha! I'm trying to get my Mosin to group, instead of pattern. The bore was dark and looked like a gravel road. Lets just say, I'm not using it on any of my garands! Even my Greek return groups about 4" @ 100yds using the Lake City M2. My Mosin grouped twice size at 50 yds.
