AK assembly question:

I like Krinkovs, and I like AKs. I dont like the 10" barrel on the Krinkov however, so what about making like, 14.5" sorta M4 lenght AK? How far could one move the front sight back along the barrel, and how much barrel does a full size AK need to function properly?

I think you have a very ambitious plan on your hands that will end up being pretty expensive.

Are you planning on making this a pistol or rifle? Because if you want to make a real Krink with a butt-stock, you're going to have to shell out the money for the SBR NFA stamp. Also, I don't know how interchangable AK barrels are (I'm assuming here you aren't going to fabricate your own...) so you may have a hard time finding a 14.5 barrel built for something like an AMD-65 (the only 14.5 Ak barrel I can think of off the top of my head) and swapping it into a Krinkov stock.

The barrel length issue depends on the caliber. If you want to make a true Krinkov in 5.45x39, anything longer than 10 inches is acceptable. Obviously, shorter barrels have reduced velocity and accuracy (as on any rifle), but they also have their positives. It all depends on what you want.

If you go longer than the 10 inch barrel, I don't think you technically have a Krink, but whatever.

I believe there is a model called the AMD-65, which uses the standard gas system and a 12.5 inch barrel. But as mentioned above, if you keep the buttstock on it, it needs a compensator to bring the barrel length to 16 inches, or it counts as a Short Barreled Rifle and needs an NFA tax stamp. And to my line of thinking, if you must have 16 inches of barrel, it might as well be 16 inches of actual barrel. But again, whatever makes your wheel go round--it's your money.

I'll SBR the rifle and just have a gunsmith chop and recrown the barrel at the desired lenght.

I know it'll be expensive, but is it even POSSIBLE.

On www.ar15.com, in the AK section, there's an entire Krink sub-board, with tons of pics of various folks' projects. Whatever possibilities you have in mind, I'm certain someone has covered it there.

If you don't get the response you want here, I'd go check there.

FYI: the standard "Krink-like but not SBR" option is to build one with a fake suppressor, though a long FS/barrel extension might work. A ton of folks (relatively, for a geek niche thing) seem to get the fake suppressor ones, and then pay the SBR tax to chop them.

Blech I'm trying to build an SBR AK that doesnt cost a grand here. I just want a simple rifle I can throw an ACE folder on and leave under my seat, and that will go bang when a pistol aint it.

I love my SU-16, but it doesnt come in anything but 1 retarded girl caliber.
