Homemade snubbies.........

Recently mm6mm6 treated us all to a view of his "Fitzed" Official Police and I for one liked it all but the trigger cut out. I'm a softy for snubbies and would be appreciative of others who would post pics of their homemade or cutdown snubbies or just opinions of what they would like to see cut down. To get to the point, I'm just trolling for ideas for a spring project other than my planned Indiana Jones gun

I cringe at the thought of "cutting something down".

So when I want a snubby, I buy 'em
M10-5, M36, SP101 & Charter Undercover.

This S&W 1917 Brazilian was cut down long before I bought it, back when powerful snubbies weren't so readily avaiable as today. It's a nice example of an old school big bore belly gun and a great shooter, too. It's one of my favorite revolvers.

Another short one

Here is an old 3rd model HE .44 Special that was a Houston PD gun.
At some point in its life the barrel was shortened and the grip altered with an unusual grip adapter that changed the grip configuration to that of a SAA.

While I presently only have factory snubs, 20 years ago I had an old Colt Cobra that had been in South America. If I remember correctly it had stampings of some Argentinian police on the backstrap.

It didn't have much blue left and had been cut down to a snubby so the lettering said "BRA"

Got stolen in burglary.

That gun had an interesting life...heck...it still might be "makin' memories"

I have two cut down "snubbies". Although most folks think that name means 2" or less I tend to think of anything shorter than 4", so these two are the only ones in the safe that qualify.


This is a 1917 that was cut down as short as possible while leaving the ejector rod full length, in this case about 3-1/4". The re-soldered front sight and the hard chrome finish were both well done.


This was a 4" M624 that must have suffered muzzle damage because a previous owner cut it to just under 3.5". He also had it cut down to a K-frame round butt configuration.

I love old guns as much as anybody but to me, unless it is very old, very rare and in very good condition, nothing is sacred. I believe that if the factory didn't produce what you want, you have to take matters into your own hands and luckily, we don't have a shortage of custom gunsmiths willing and able to make your dreams come true. I don't have any cut-down snubs but there were two I found that I wish I had bought. One was a well-worn Colt 1917 that had been cut to 4", fitted with Micro adjustable sights, stag grips and was nicely refinished. Still kicking myself for not grabbing it for $250. The other was a S&W Triple Lock .44Spl that was actually in very good, original condition but had been cut to 3" at some point. I let that one get away too.

I'm still baffled at how so many shooters are so closed minded about custom guns and even go so far as to berate others for doing as they wish with their own property.

I haven't done it, but I keep thinking I should cut my 6.5" 624 to the end of the ejector shroud. Then install a Patridge front sight. Basically give it the profile of a 3.5" M27. Perhaps maybe even coat it in a finish to give it a nice "blue" or maybe just polish the stainless making it nice and shiny.
