Hey all - been reloading .45 and .357 sig for about a year, and am venturing into .223. Wouldn't mind being able to create a reasonably similar XM193 clone - I know I can make loads that run in my AR but it would be nice to know that they'll also run in my buddies' ARs, just in case. Anybody happen to know what components and quantities could replicate XM193? Is there a cheaper/better way to get the same thing?

Not that I'd always want to load such a SHTF round, but nice to know it's possible.

For the record, I've got a Lyman power case trimmer, chamfer/debur tool, RCBS small-base x-dies in .223, Imperial Sizing Wax, and a Hornady reamer on the way from Midway - look about right?

Thanks all.

Using a chronograph and published data as a guide, I have found AA2460 and H335 to be very good at what you seek. I like mag primers for these two propellants, and for ball propellants in general with rifles.

Hard not to find a lot of good combo's out there to make M193 spec ammo.

I'd recommend a case gauge to be sure you sizing is done 100%.
It will catch the occasional case that has a defect & should ensure that the cartridge chamber in other AR's with chambers in spec.

Data I cut and pasted from AR15.com

Found under the 'Industry' subforum at ar15.com, here are the velocities for XM193 shot from various barrel lengths. As advised above, you can get a chronograph (only about 100 bucks, mine was on sale for $80) and consult published load tables to imitate XM193 velocity for your barrel length using any one of a dozen different powders.

XM193 bullet is 55 grain, lead core fmj. Buy those in bulk anywhere.

XM193 VELOCITY DATA
Barrel length:
7.5" 2364 FPS ... 10.5" 2755 FPS

10.5" 2755 FPS ... 14.5" 2984 FPS

14.5" 2984 FPS ... 16" 3075 FPS

16" 3075 FPS ... 18" 3245 FPS

18" 3245 ... 20" 3254 FPS

Final note: Since XM193 is a clone of a military round, it's best to make sure your barrel (and your buddy's) are chambered milspec 5.56 if you imitate XM193. Since both of your rifles are AR variants, you probably won't have a problem. It just pays to make sure.

Baron, find an old Speer #10 manual. It uses the Mini 14 as the test rifle. The loads using Olin 748 get up there.I have shot the max load in an AR and Mini with no problem but I worked up to it. Byron
