A masked man who authorities think was armed with a rifle broke through a Bastrop couple's bedroom patio door early Sunday morning, fatally shooting one man and injuring two other people in the house.

Saleem Bhaidani, 43, was asleep in his bedroom with his wife and 2-year-old son when a man broke into the house on Texas 71 West near Texas 304 about 2:50 a.m., according to the Bastrop County sheriff's office.

Bhaidani confronted the man while his wife grabbed their son and ran to another room, authorities said, noting that she heard gunshots as she ran to her parents' bedroom.

The wife woke her parents, then called 911, the sheriff's office said, and her parents ran through the kitchen, where they were shot. The names of the wife and her parents were not released.

The intruder escaped, apparently through the same door he used to enter the house.

Bhaidani, who was shot twice, was taken to Brackenridge Hospital, where he died.

Bhaidani's father-in-law was shot in the right wrist and left thigh. He was taken to Brackenridge Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Bhaidani's mother-in-law was shot in the right arm and was treated and released.

The family could not be reached for comment.

The intruder was wearing a blue coat and a blue or green cotton cap and a red handker- chief-type bandana or a red ski mask with eye holes, according to the sheriff's department.

No other information was released, and a department spokesman could not be reached for comment.
