SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a homeowner and a pair of alleged intruders in his home.

The shooting happened at a home on Wakefield Way near Florin Road.

Police said the homeowner, whose name has not been released, told officers that he and his wife heard a knock at their front door about 8:30 a.m. They found two Hispanic teenage boys at the door who said they were looking for the man's grandson.

After being told the grandson was not at home, police said the two came back a second time, but this time the homeowner was armed with a gun when he answered the door.

"The same two male Hispanic teens forced their way into the residence. One of them was armed with a handgun. The (homeowner) retreated and took cover behind a chair where he does exchange a couple rounds of fire," Sacramento Police Department Sgt. Justin Risley said.

The shooting continued as the homeowner ran down a hallway to a bedroom, where police said he shot and killed one of the intruders.

The other intruder fled the home on foot, and police searched the surrounding area on the ground and from the air, alerting neighbors of his description. He remains at large.

A man who would not give his name told KCRA 3 he was the homeowner's grandson.

"Let this be a lesson to be learned ... if anybody comes in the house -- anybody's house -- you never know what could happen to you," the man said.

Police said the homeowner has not been charged with any crimes.

"All indications are that the man was protecting his life and the life of his wife," Risley said.

Now that's one kid we don't have to worry about joining some prison gang. Rehabilitation through Reincarnation. Ask the Dali Llama, it works.

This may be off topic, but what purpose whatsoever does it serve to say the men were Hispanic?

I mean, I have no problem with studies of race/ethnicity and criminality in general, but does it really matter to the story as an individual incident?

While I agree race is generally over reported I can see the value here since one intruder is still at large and the story could be read by those in the community.

What gets me is that the say "and a pair of alleged intruders " alleged.. what a CROCK.

I thought the same thing. If someone's in your home without your permission then that's an intruder, no questions about it.

It's correctly "alleged" because right now we just have Mr. Homeowner's word that that's what happened.

It might turn out that Grandson lured his enemies over and had his granddad cap one. No, I don't think that's what happened, but it might have.

In any case, newspapers are obligated, in order to avoid libel charges, to say "allaged" about any crime for which the "alleged" criminal has not yet been found guilty in court. It's just necessary legal CYA.

criminal has not yet been found guilty in court.

Actually he was found guilty in court. A higher court handed out his sentence. Present on the jury were Smith and Wesson, Mr Glock, representatives from HK & Sig Sauer and Moonie Bro. Kahr. :D

I dunno.

I tend to think that being descriptive about the intruders is a good thing. Just the facts, ma'am, Joe Friday and all. Makes it safer for the community as well, since one of the perps is still outstanding.

I would not be averse to being descriptive about captured felons as well. I mean, how can you be wrong with reporting the facts of the case?

I thought 'alleged' was funny too. Yeah officer, the 'alleged' sonofabitch is lieing face down in the 'alleged' hallway.

They do have to do it though, and truely it does perserve the premise of "innocent untill PROVEN guilty in a court of law."

I could deal with a *real* description of the second perp, rather than the borderline raceist "some mexican dude" Yeah, I'll put out an APB...

Heck, I'd settle for race, and height. Or race and clothing. Or hair. Or something.
