Homeowner shoots, kills intruder

Police in Collierville, TN say a homeowner shot and killed one of several people who broke into his house over the weekend.

Police Lieutenant Greg Flint says homeowner Brian Harper was awakened by his burglar alarm early Saturday and fired at the intruders with a .45-caliber handgun, striking one of them. Flint says the others scattered and Harper doesn't know if the several other shots he fired hit anyone else.

Police say none of the home invaders fired a weapon, but investigators don't know if any of them had one.

Police identified the dead intruder from fingerprints and say he was 28-year-old Lakim Duffy.

His police record shows arrests since 1998 for violations including criminal trespass, especially aggravated robbery and cocaine possession.

From what little info there is, it sounds like getting him was a lucky shot. At least the way the article describes it.

Anyway, it sounds like a good shoot given the limited info. Chalk up another one for a homeowner that chose to exercise his rights.

This doesn't surprise me. I lived in Collierville from 1999 to 2004 (we moved 20 miles north to Lakeland in July of '04). Collierville used to be a charming small town about 20 miles southeast of Memphis. That's what it was when my family moved there from Arizona in 1999, anyway. It had a population of around 20,000 at the time, as I recall.

I still remember chuckling at the crime report in the weekly local paper. It had stuff like, "Someone broke into the refreshment stand at the high school football field and stole a Coke and two candy bars", and "Ted Jones reports finding the lock on his garden shed broken and the door open, but nothing appeared to have been taken." My favorite of all time, though, was the crime report with a single item in it -- "A car driving next to the golf course was struck by a golf ball, cracking the windshield. Police interviewed a dozen golfers on the course but were unable to determine who launched the errant shot."

In 2000, the TN-385 freeway was completed, shortening the commute to/from Memphis from 45-60 minutes of two lane to 20 minutes on the freeway. Growth exploded, of course. New subdivisions and stores started going up everywhere, and traffic got terrible. Within a year, Collierville experienced the first murder it had seen in more than 25 years, when the proprietor of a corner grocery store was killed in an apparent robbery. The next year, there was a big drug bust at the local middle school. In the last two years we were there, the crime report changed tone dramatically. Break-ins at homes were starting to become commonplace. Collierville has had several homicides in the last few years. Last January, a man hwo lives alone was found shot to death in his home. He'd apparently been dead for a few weeks. The police think he was killed by an intruder around Christmas.

This is also at least the second time in the last two years that a homeowner has shot and killed an intruder in Collierville. There was a case in the last year or so there involving a disgruntled ex-boyfriend who showed up at her house with a rifle. Dad locked the doors and called 911. He went around the back and broke in the kitchen door, while dad (still on the phone with 911) got his family upstairs. The police arrived and were sitting outside trying to decide what to do when they heard the BANG! When the kid tried to go up the stairs to the 2nd floor, dad shot and killed him.

We got out while the gettin' was good. I will say this for Collierville, though -- people there are generally well armed and not afraid to protect themselves. In addition, the local DA and police were supportive of the dad/shooter a few years back, and it sounds like they will be this time, too.

I'd guess Lakim's parole officer is glad not to have to fill out the paper work and waste time in court rooms to get him sent back to prison.

Thats a perfect description of my home town. VERY small rural town of Oneida about an hour outside Knoxville TN and 10 minutes from the KY state line. When I was small it was truly a place like Mayberry. People did not lock their doors FOR REAL. Now the growth has just started from nowhere over the last seven years or so. We are very close to Big South Fork and the Smokey Mountains and the cost of living is low and the land beautiful and people found that out. Now land prices are being driven up so high no one can afford it and murders and break in's are common place not to mention every other freakin thing you can imagine..
