Homeowner Shoots, Kills Intruder

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- An intruder was killed in an exchange of gunfire with a homeowner, authorities said.

A man approached a home early Sunday when he was confronted by the homeowner, Hall County Sheriff's Maj. Jeff Strickland said.

"The perpetrator fired several shots toward the homeowner," Strickland said. "The homeowner was able to return fire, striking and killing the perpetrator."

The homeowner, who was not injured, was acting in self-defense and will not face charges, Strickland said.

You know what I like best about this report?

"Homeowner", "Intruder", "Perpetrator".

Not

"Gunman", "Victim", or "Alleged Intruder"

Yeah, it's nice to not see a bunch of stuff about ongoing investigations. No man should have to worry about being arrested when he's legally defending himself.

Silly Journalists

Is it just me?

Good story -- as far as it goes.
Was able to return fire . . .
With what?

How about:
"The homeowner [using a shotgun/hunting rifle/9mm pistol/.357 revolver] was able to return fire, striking and killing the perpetrator."

If news is going to be useful, it should provide enough data.

When the bad guy wins, his gun is the star of the show:
The GUNMAN sprayed the store with bullets fired from his fully automatic Glock revolver.

How it should be:
And now a tip for homeowners:
Of the 623 successful defenses of homes and families this week, 311 were accomplished using shotguns, 181 were accomplished using revolvers, 122 made use of an automatic pistol, and the remaining 109 used a rifle.

It was hard enough for the newspaper to choke out "homeowner", "intruder", and "perpetrator". Do you really expect them to know the difference between a revolver, semi-auto pistol, shotgun, rifle? Although they may use shotgun because it has big, messy splattering connotations.

+1 that cracked me up

yes. . . homeowner was able to return fire with __________, would be awesome. Caliber, model even?

but maybe he didnt want to talk about his weapons for the news crew, not knowing how they would spin it.

I'm as pleased as the rest of you about this. Let's also pause for a moment of silence/prayer in support of the homeowner who is probably feeling a little stressed and overwhelmed in the aftermath of this event.

I heard about this on the radio this morning and was about to look up the details. Thanks for doing it for me:)

Im glad that there are no charges as it should be

Kudos to the homeowner, although I too am curious what types of firearms were involved.

+1 to the news station for concise and unbiased reporting.
-100 For the poorly constructed website...the darn thing looks like one huge banner ad.

Who, What, Where, When, How

If news is going to be useful, it should provide enough data.

It is bothersome to me that so many journalists forget the fundamentals of good reporting. When the story involves guns, their reporting is even worse. For some reason, most reporters have never educated themselves about guns. If you're on the crime beat, that knowledge should be mandatory.

Recently a local newspaper reporter attemted to provide more details, and informed the reader that the shooter used a "Barretta".

You know, so many average homeowners are dispatching the baddies so effectively we really should find out what training they do. Perhaps we need to join in.
;) ;) ;) :D
