Hornady 150gn Soft Point (#3031) ???

I prefer bullets that don’t fragment too much. If you grinding your own meat…even if you’re careful a shard or two of bullet jacket always seems to slip through.
 
Aim between shoulder and neck, where there are more bones and meat. Bullets are not going to expand without resistance, and there is just not enough resistance in the rib cage.
 
Sounds like the bullets worked well for the situation.I have three 308's and I hunt with different bullets for each one.My Model 7 "woods" rifle shoots 150 grain Swift Siracco's and they act a lot like the OP's Hornadys.No explosive expansion,no dropping dead in their tracks,usually a short blood trail with a dead deer less than 50 yards from where it was shot.These bullets penetrate and stay together well,and if I had to take a raking shot at a bad angle,they will do it.The other two are as much long range target rifles as they are hunting rifles.I shoot Hornady 168 grain A-Max out of one of them and 168 grain Berger Classic Hunters out of the other one.With these bullets I get explosive expansion and deer fall like they were struck by lightning.I shoot deer with the crosshair lined up with the leg on the off side.That usually means the bullet will probably hit a bone somewhere along its way and transfer tremendous shock to the animal.Shooting like this gives me the largest target and is usually a dead deer right there with the more explosive bullets.It usually wastes some shoulder meat,but that just goes along with it.The bullets we have nowadays are far better and more predictable than what we used to have.
