There is a myth out there in the wilds of the hunters imagination that critters are supposed to fall over immediately if shot placement is a perfect behind the shoulder hit and the bullet performance is up to speed. Nothing could be further from the truth. With a double lung shot it might take as long as 10 to 20 seconds for a critter to die. How far can a deer sprint in say 10 seconds? A human can go about 100 yards in 10 seconds, I guessing a deer can almost triple that. In thick cover that can seem like a long way. Especially if there isn’t a firehose style blood trail.
And bigger critters like buffalo, moose, eland can stay on their feet for a long time after a double lung shot. If you want critters to fall over quicker stop shooting behind the shoulder and start shooting them in the vital triangle. American hunters will huff and puff and scream and shout and stomp their feet about this but it’s a simple anatomical fact. A shot through the vital triangle is getting lungs/ heart/ and disrupting the shoulder muscles. Once I started shooting for the triangle my tracking jobs pretty much went away or became much shorter.
Hitting the heart is great! Hitting the “spaghetti junction” above the heart is even better and produces almost instant zero blood pressure. Cutting the the major arteries above the heart is pumping all the available blood out and it produces a double lung shot to boot.
