I am new to reloading. I already have Hi Skor 700X and Hornady 45 Cal 230 grain HP/XTP but all I can find are powder weights for the FMJ. Does it make that big of a difference when it is HP? Should you, in general, use less powder for HP versus FMJ or more? Has anyone use this combination before if so what did they use and with what results. Thanks.

You can use the 230 FMJ data with those 230 Gr XTPs. Load them to 1.235 O.A.L.

Welcome to THR

I would check Hornady's own website for their Load Data. I have some 185 gr XTP and they have a seperate listing ( for XTP ) in all the data I have read.

The deep hollow point uses up more case than a standard fmj or jhp bullet.

Case volume is less. Pressure can increase greatly.

Ever check that against other JHP's in person?

The Hornady's hollow cavity is pretty average, and it does not seat much deeper in the case, if any at all, depending on the bullet, when seated at 1.235 O.A.L..

Thanks

I took your advice and trialed a few rounds which worked well. Just made up a batch of 100 to try. Thanks again.

I agree with using the load for standard jacketed 230gr bullets for the XTPs - that has worked in all the calibers I've loaded with XTPs.

Here's another tip you might can use:
In my 1911-A1, I use 5.2gr of 700-X with 230gr XTPs with pretty good results.

I could use 700X to load every pistol caliber I shoot. Not max in .357 or .44 Mag obviously, and not the best in everything, but it's good stuff. I use several powders in pistol calibers.
