has anyone had a hornady ap press that uses the inserts well my 44 mag dies I can't use the belling and bullet seating dies because they screw down beyond the threads that would support the die locking ring any suggestions ?

That sounds like a 44 Special issue. These either/or die sets sometimes require ordering separate parts like the expander plug.

the dies is a lee and they are 44 mag die does any one have a bullet seating die lyman or rcbs they would like to sell I think that would take care of this problem

Guess not....I'll retract that.....forgot about the bushings.

Keep in mind that the LnL AP uses LNL bushings. There is no place to put a lock nut on the underside. What is useful would be changing to Dillon lock nuts on the top side, which are skinny and get immediate engagement without the standoff fraction of the fat Lee nuts.

Another alternative is to try the 44 Special expander plug (longer), allowing the die to be backed out well above the point where the threads disappear. A 44 Special seating stem would provide a similar effect with seating.

Oh yeah, huh! I guess the "nut under the tool head", Dillon users trick won't work here. So do they need to make a skinnier bushing? They probably don't think so, rathering instead that you just buy their die sets.

I'm running into this issue with Lee dies on the bushings for the single stage Hornady press. So far I've gotten by with turning the locking rings over so the thread is on the side next to the flange of the bushing. Just remove the useless O ring at the same time.

The bushing is not the issue, except that the crown of the press is made thick enough to engage them. There is too little space between the shell plate and the crown of the press to put a big lock nut under there. There also is no die thread extending that low.

There are very reasonable solutions that preclude any need to be taking snarky shots at Hornady. See earlier posts.

Absolutely nothing "snarky" intended in what I said. Anyone else think I was being "snarky"? I was simply suggesting that they probably wouldn't change their product to make it easier on their competition. That would be unusual in the extreme. IOW's, it's reasonable that companys do not go out of their way to encourage their customers to buy competitor's products over their own.

Well, the rolleyes means something. The issue is Lee being non-standard, not Hornady shutting out competitors.

I use Lee dies for 380, 9mm, and 45 ACP in my AP press. I use the Hornady lock rings instead of the lee ones and have no problem.

hornady ap

just solved the problem bought a new set of rcbs dies thanks for all your comments Bruce
