Hornady AP problem with IMR 4064???

Well, some of you guys might have had the same problem finding IMR 4895 as I have, maybe not. I switched to IMR 4064, and finished up the 4895 loading some.308, and switched everything to load small rifle - I thought I'd screwed up the powder dump, it acted very oddly with the 4064, so I broke it down again and made sure everything was good to go -until I put that 4064 in it! I can't get that stuff to meter at all with the small powder dump, and was wondering if anybody has had the same experience stuffing that 'long rod' powder into a small rifle caliber bullet - And want to know if I switch back to the Large caliber powder dump, if it will meter the 4064 into a .223 case without a big mess - or at all! - I don't want to end up with say, 5 grains of powder in a round, but don't want to have to check the grain weight of every round, either - kinda takes away from the whole progressive thing, you know? I could use some help on this one, before I end up with most of a pound of powder all over the place...

I don't have an answer, as I don't use the Hornady measure.
I don't care for the changeable inserts.
There are some measures that cannot handle the long extruded granules. I'm not sure if the Hornady falls into that category or not.
Try your larger insert and see, it may prevent some powder bridging that can occur.
IMR4064 is a very versatile powder and should be worth the time, even if you use powder measure scoops and dribble to weight on your scale.

Surprise answer...call Hornady Customer Service tomorrow morning and discuss your problem with them. I don't have or have used a Hornady powder measure, but it sounds like your powder is bridging somehow.

I purchased a LNL as I read how well it metered extruded powders, in short it did no better than Dillon’s powder measure and another member here now has it. Extruded in .223 magnifies the problem as bridging is a hassle. Get a 45-70 and an RCBS manual measure to use up what you have left then buy a ball powder for 223 (748, ram shot TAC/Xtermator) and life will simplify.

So now I've got 2 lbs. of powder I've got to weigh by hand..I guess that's better than blowing up! I guess it's on to another powder, maybe Varget? I hear that's in short supply as well?

I'm glad I had the chance to read this as I was planning on trying some 4064. I didn't realize that it was long grain extruded and those types of powders are really best used across a scale IMO. FWIW 335 and Varget really do meter very well from measures as does 4895.

IMR4064 is a very versatile powder and should be worth the time, even if you use powder measure scoops and dribble to weight on your scale.

That is how I do it, and I have great results.

4350 and 4066 have both worked fine for me in the large rotor. Drops ranging from 41 to 82g . I usually toss the first ten or so back in the powder bin before checking for exact measures. Also usually start with a full bin and replenish at 1/3 full. Check the lever arm connector for position / tightness.

My RCBS often hangs up on 4064. If it's not too bad I check it on the scale (like every other charge).

If it's a real jam stop, I just dump it back and rethrow.

They say the cheap lee powder measure handles the long sticks better than the high end powder measures.

Have you put a baffle of some kind in the measure?
I just used a 4" funnel with a piece of clear plastic tubing on it, put in the measure, cut the tubing about even with the body of the measure, and fill the funnel.
It seems to work good for me.
One thing you have to do before loading,,, run about 5 unsized cases first to settle the powder before you do any adjusting,, every time you adjust, run some more cases and check weight.
Pause when at the top of the stroke to let the powder flow into the case.

I use 4064 in .308 and just weigh every charge on my scale, its an awesome powder that really performs in .308, especially with bullets 165 grain and up.
